Wouldn’t you expect that things would be in Danish in Denmark? This is a very strange thing to bring up as an inconvenience. CRINGY argument…..big time.

In some respects you don't seem to have been well prepared for your stay in Denmark. Yes many danes speak english at a reasonable level, but that does not imply the country is bilingual. Therefore my advice to people not coming for holidays, but for staying years in Denmark: It will be quite an advantage to learn danish. Um, the weather......okay, the winter period is predominantly dark, I agree. But what did you expect, situated at a latitude around 55 degrees north, and not having continental climate, the weather is influenced by fronts from the gulf stream , resulting in dominating overcast weather. The difficulty in making new friends here, by contacting new people, is an issue to recognize, and its understandable you couldn't prepare for that.

Hi, I stumbled across this video and felt I should comment and shared my experience. I am Italian but I have been living in Denmark for 28 years. From the moment I moved here (I was 24), until now, I have experienced most of the things you describe and much more. Some things I agree but some I don't. Your first point is not a valid one, if you don't speak Danish, it is your problem, not the country or the people living there problem. It is fairly normal to learn the language within a couple of years, when you moved to another country. The fact that 99,9% of Danes speak English is a big advantage, if you move to Italy, France or Germany you'll have the same problem in being included in conversations but with less people that speak English. Your second point is by far the most valid for me and I can relate totally to it. I made a point in finding a true Danish friend for the first few years I was living here, but never gone past the good relations. I too miss the part of meeting people spontaneously but luckily many many foreigners are living here from all different cultures and I met friends for life anyway. The weather is the weather: Danes will tell you "there is not such as bad weather but only bad outfit for it". I can feel slight depress if the summer also has been shitty and rainy (25% of the summers are like that), generally my happiness and state of mind is not profoundly decided by the weather conditions. I must add though that moving to London improved the weather side by max 5%, London is awesome for many other reasons but not for the sunshine and long summers. Take care!

Your reasons for leaving are why I would move there! Denmark sounds fantastic for an introvert who doesn't want to chitchat and enjoys being outdoors but can't stand too much sun. I love cold, dark days! I guess it's a personality thing. If they have good food it would be heaven!

I love this, thankyou for the honest feedback, as someone that grew up in England I always wondered what these Nordic countries were like, and their mentality like they are better than everyone else and know whats best is very off-putting, lately I see them move towards a fascist like mentality which just completes the puzzle if im honest.

I´m Danish and when I meet foreigners in the beginning I always speak English with them as an ok thing to do. When I learn that people I´m talking to have lived here for 6-7 or even 20 years and still not speaking any words in Danish or to few sentences- I loose interest. It is simply to arrogant to expect me to speak English because they are lazy.

i had a long list of things i could complain about but i'll shorten it to the key points, some i agree with and some i disagree with: first of all, yes, pronounciation sucks, i FULLY agree to this, i frankly hate the language sometimes (im native) and would much rather speak english on a daily basis, in fact in copenhagen you will definetely find people who are more inclined to speak english, especially because theres also a lot of foreign people here, either studying or working or a combination of the 2, however the more you get away from bigger cities, the less you hear people speaking english or things in english, this is because theres likely not a lot of tourism there or english speaking people there in general, this is NOT a danish problem exclusively, so the argument WHILE i partially agree to it, falls flat there. now, you lived there for, about, 4.5 years, and apparently made no effort to learn the language, or at the very least, enough to hold basic conversation and you're SHOCKED about the language barrier? hate to say it, but thats on you, no one said you had to become fluent, but youre kinda harking on us danes for not always adjusting to you speaking english primarily, we are ALSO very social however the concept of ''chatting up'' strangers on the street has in recent years been riddled with volunteer workers from like, amnesty international etc etc trying to get money (which is understandable) but also scam/con artists or cult people, so people will politely say ''im busy'', this is not a anti-social thing. in most places like restaurants, bars, café's etc that have the option for a english worded menu, which again, is catered to tourists and english speakers, which again again, isnt a neccessity the farther away you get from big cities, when you leave copenhagen, even greater copenhagen, you expect every single part of denmark to cater to some potential tourists or english speakers? thats just not how it works... i dunno when you lived here, but we had a summer where there was no rain at all and the next summer we had only rain, the danish weather is wacky, also, false again, i've lived here for nearly 29 years, and sometimes theres more rain in summer than winter, and at times we've even had winters with next to no snow or rain, so frankly, you're trying to sound like an expert on danish weather when you lived here for 4.5 years, i'd think danes who were born here would be the better experts... and since you pointed it out, no, hygge is NOT a winter thing, its just a word whose meaning here is about having a good time relaxing with friends, family, acquintances etc, it can be done anywhere, as long as you are with someone, it can even be used about a singular person and their pet. ive lived here for about 25 years, grew up in central copenhagen and EVEN growing up there, and in the last 10 years its been easy to find fellow english speakers there. im sorry you had a rough time, but not learning the language is on you, not the people who didnt adjust to you every time and the ''dark months'' is not the weather, thats just how it is in northern europe, so thats also a moot point since its not a ''danish weather thing'' and gotta say, in the last 4 years, theres 100% been waaaay more sun even in winter

I would say that Danes perceive Denmark only for Danes. You will experience Danish sarcastic humor, lack of mercy, hidden racism (which I think is the worst form) and much more. If you are Danish, it is the "best place" in the world and of course they are the happiest population. You must never criticize Denmark towards a Dane. They will directly say find another place (leave our country) Maybe you can feel it in the comments in this video

I know how to make friends in Denmark as an adult. If you go to a bar, then there is alot of drunk people over there, and in Denmark, it is a secret rule deep inside the brain to socialise with people when you're drinking.

What I love about Denmark: 1. the language. As I am a linguist, I am totally amazed at the pronunciation of Danish ;) 2. I love the way Danes respect each other, respect the opinions of others and don't pressure you to anything, and 3. I like the WEATHER, because I cannot stand when the temperature is over 25-27 degrees, so Danish climate is just perfect 👍
