De que material es el cilindro ????
@leeknightable
@leeknightable Ай бұрын
El cilindro está hecho de piezas de plomería de PVC que puedes conseguir en la ferretería. Reductores de plomería, etc. The cylinder is made of PVC plumbing parts that you can get from the hardware supply store. Plumbing reducers, etc.

Yes, the new diaphragm and stylus and gaskets, braces, etc. were all custom made by me. All of the earlier modifications were made by me also according to suggestions from Ben, "The Victrola Guy".

A Beauty. What is the diameter for the reproducer throat for these machines? I'm assuming you need a larger size horn opening as well as a larger diameter rubber tube. The one you bought from Rick last Wayne show was a super nice one! Tell me, How many BCs do you have?

Have you ever tried recording on the Edison cylinder phonograph using tin foil? What did they use for a diaphragm? Was there a recording diaphragm and a different playback one with a less damaging needle so they cut with one type and playback with one less likely to damage the foil? I think the original recordings on foil were damaged by playing.
@leeknightable

Thank you for your comment. Tinfoil is expensive and somewhat hard to come by. When you are experimenting with a new device, you could go through a fortune in real tinfoil before you get the instrument fine turned. Maybe one could test with aluminum foil and then switch over to tinfoil. Originally the diaphragm was a thin piece of metal. Later on, mica and other materials were used. On the original Tinfoil Phonograph, the Kruesi, there were as you suggested two different phonets, one for recording and one for playback. The styli on each one was made differently. This design was quickly abandoned. The main thing to keep in mind is that these machines were new and experimental, and the ideas were changing rapidly. Thanks!! Lee

Many years ago we had this same exact recording on a one-sided 78-rpm disc record. But it wasn't a Columbia record; it was a "Lakeside".

I think it's been said that the Edison Diamond Discs (With the Blue Amberol cylinders coming a close second) were some of the best records available in the pre-electric era. I think the pathe records also sounded much better than most as well.

This invention was genius. As for making your own with hardware store pieces was an interesting project. Not many people would think of making something like this! For Edison to originally do this during his time had to be a mechanical feat. Before this, there was no possible way to reproduce sounds. Photography and then alter on TV were additional huge leaps in technology.

Marisa, Thank you for your comment and I am pleased that you like the video. As legend has it, this was the first thing recorded when Thomas Edison first tested the "Kruesi" Tinfoil Phonograph in December of 1877. Improvements to the phonograph were quickly made. Today, enthusiasts often use this phrase when testing a Tinfoil Phonograph. Thanks! Lee

Okay so something I'm trying to figure out about the tin foil phonographs that I can't seem to find anywhere on the internet: why the weights
@leeknightable
@leeknightable 3 жыл бұрын
The weights or I guess you could say, "The Flywheel" is very necessary to produce a more even and smooth recording/playback speed. If you are interested in Tinfoil phonographs, I would recommend Rene Rondeau's book. You can look up his site or look on ebay. Many thanks for your question! Lee

Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to use other materials for recording such as aluminum, copper, iron or even silver or lead? And how would that effect the sound quality?
@mikemule1964
@mikemule1964 3 жыл бұрын
Im sure it would work well. However the main concern would be cost and efficiency. Tin/aluminum foil is cheap compared to the aforementioned materials. A good question though, i will try this

This is sooooo cool. I've been thinking of a similar thing, perhaps with a speed controlled motor. The thing I had no clue about is the diaphragm material. Obviously paper works fine. Perhaps some experimenting with different materials? What did Edison use?
@leeknightable
@leeknightable 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the first diaphragm was thin flexible metal. Later, all types of materials were experimented with including mica. I wouldn't recommend a speed controlled motor at this level of technology. The main thing is to have fun with it. Thanks for the comment and good luck. Lee
