Always be obvious about what you are doing. Being sneaky and lying will get you called out or worse. If someone you have photographed engages you in conversation, be honest and humble. If they ask you to delete a photo you took, you should. If someone specifically asks you not to photograph them, don't. I think if you watch closely, the guy reached in his pocket like he had a gun and he threatened the shoot me along the way. This was before any deescalation would have taken place I think. Hey brother. I am a fellow New Yorker and photographer, but I am curious to know why you decided not to reveal to these young men that you took a picture of them? Don’t get me wrong I do understand why you might have made that choice. Myself I always make a discernment of when to ask to take someone’s picture or not. If I don’t ask and they ask me I would reveal to them that I did. Why? To avoid this type of situation that you experienced. We are in an age of social media so people always want to know what is the intent after you have photographed them or recorded for a number of reasons good or bad. Just my 2 cents.
@moeranyc10 күн бұрын
Hello homie. These young scholars were messing with people in chinatown earlier as I stated in another comment. You can see they were joking around using fake mandarin in the video as they passed us. It wasn't a big deal they were just clowning around. I thought to photograph them from the hip as I passed by because the shot looked interesting to me. I captured 2 shots. As we passed by, the "gun" teen said, let me see the camera, but we ignored him. Then those two approached from behind as you see in the video asking me if I took a picture. I was hesitant at first because I felt a little hostility, but then that guy yelled out YO!, stuck his hand in his jacket pocket as he approached, and I thought nothing I tell these guys is going to make them act reasonable. So, we walked away. No way at that point was I going to show them a photo or my camera. Everyone out there had cameras, but I don't think it warrants the harassment nor the threat of shooting either one of us. They are in public doing their shenanigans, I took a picture. That's just how it went. I take photos because I am a photographer. Thanks for your question and your 2 cents.

It’s really only a matter of time before a street photographer in New York runs into serious trouble, and this approach can only make it worse. Another comment on this video stated, “Remember that you’re a photo journalist documenting the good, bad & ugly”. Calling this video and the related photos “photojournalism” seems somewhat grandiose. Photojournalism has a point, but this encounter with “The Risks of Street Photography in New York” via a single random, detached photo, seems pointless. Jumping to “fear of teenagers” and a previous incident regarding “a bunch of teenagers gathering” emphasises the social media clickbait value of this video - as opposed to serious photojournalism or documentary photography. You state, “I don’t remember exactly what happened that day but I know police swarmed in”. Did you not make any notes at the time of the Brooklyn incident? Could you not have checked the date (metadata) and googled it? Arguably, your Chinatown incident is made more problematic by: (1) one of the people you are with turning around and photographing / filming the confrontation, which might have escalated the tension; (2) your sense of urgency in posting this video and the photo on KZbin (and maybe other social media?) immediately after. These three guys are likely to be more annoyed with other street photographers in future, regardless of whether anyone attempts to actually photograph them; whereas, the possible negative repercussions of this encounter would be reduced over time, just as the value of random 2024 photos in NYC might become more interesting. Since there is no photojournalism here, and the only “story waiting to be told through a lens” is one about the guy behind the camera, why not wait ten years to show the photo in question? It would be more interesting, have some historic value - and if the three guys ever saw it, they might even thank you. Why post their video on KZbin now? Except for clicks? In the social sciences, ethical considerations extend to not causing problems “in the field” that would hinder research by subsequent researchers. It seems in street photography, rare concerns with ethics never consider the impact on other photographers. To end where I began, it’s really only a matter of time before a street photographer in New York runs into serious trouble, and this approach can only make it worse.
@moeranyc10 күн бұрын
@@stuartj.wright1579 tldr. I’m not doing photo journalism in this video. I’m hustling taking photos that I find interesting. If someone gets upset because I take a picture, that’s too bad. Public photography isn’t a crime, it’s not my intention to make anyone upset. I’d normally show someone a photo, and even offer to send it to them as I have in other videos, but these clowns came at me hostile. I’m not click baiting anyone, there is another video about the teens fighting and they were just gathering to fight. Sure isn’t because I’m out there doing photography that’s the issue.

@@moeranyc Right, but one of your viewers seemed to think this is photojournalism, and some street photographers do seem to have a very grandiose view of what they're doing, in some cases in order to justify being intrusive and extractive. I'm just wondering if some of the risks for something "interesting" are worth it, if there is no higher goal. And why post this encounter, especially so soon after the event?

@@stuartj.wright1579 words are free and people can think what they want. Thats fine with me. You’re assuming I posted this after the event. No. This took place over a year ago. I’ve shot many more videos since then. Not every photographer has to have a high goal. If the shot is interesting, that’s ok for me. I’ve explained that. It may be different for you and someone else, and that’s ok too. I photograph New York and there are risks. I’m not going to let it rattle me. There’s a bigger problem in nyc and it isn’t me taking photographs of the city life.
@stuartj.wright157910 күн бұрын
@@moeranyc Okay, thanks for elaborating. A year is a long time in social media time, although not according to other metrics. Yes, there are problems in NYC as in many places, but I was referring to increased risks for photographers as a result of photographers' decisions and actions, not worsening circumstances in NYC more broadly. I agree, high goals aren't essential, but the risks seem especially high when the goal is relatively trivial.
