i played lots of turtle in the 2000's n won some important purple belt matches with it - its much stronger offensively in the gi, the outside pants grip and sleeves allow for much easier jump over sweeps - see telles vs jacare gi match Copa do Mundo de Jiu-Jitsu 2005 ,,,, i now only go to turtle to avoid the pass vs pulling it. too many people @ blackbelt will just do basically nothing n rack up advantages if they really respect your turtle (usually in the tournament people will see your game and gain respect at that level) and if you catch a reversal its not points. i just go to open guards then if they pass i never ever have to be 3 points down in side control -- oh small note: turtleing off a pass often leads to your defensive structure having weaknesses as you turtle. the opponent will be trying to stop you. which leads to a slower less organized shape as you turn over possibly allowing a hook or bad grip (to me its not scary for guys like us but its definitely not optimal)

Truth is, BJJ guys are not good at attacking the turtle. Eduardo Telles the master himself made that point with his turtle guard. Wrestlers are better at attacking this position. They put a lot of work in this position. BJJ guys not so much, while this is probably the best position to win any point based competition, since even if they pass and you turtle, they receive no points.

There’s always that one rare turtle guy in every gym. I use it for 60 seconds to guage your strength and skill, if you can not open my turtle, you gonna be in trouble. The turtle is a trap. 😄

@user-sl4sx6dp4c when it comes to the hooks and the overall movement yes, but no heel hooks allowed and the grips in the Gi might slow things down.

i played it in the 2000's n won a lot of matches from it but as i got to brown belt i left it to play more attacking guards. i just use it to avoid points and then ill play turtle
@credable758611 ай бұрын
I mean you may as well butt-scoot around. Actually, butt-scooting has more moxy than this as you'd at least be advancing on the opponent.
@liukang8511 ай бұрын
this is awesome! I'm a beginner but I feel like turtle guard is underrated. Wrestlers use it for a reason, if one can learn how to protect oneself well here it's probably very viable
@Grapplinginstructionals11 ай бұрын
You’re so right! It is very underrated and since so few people understand the mechanics, they don’t regalias the danger they are in. This becomes a great advantage for the guy using the turtle system. Magnus has a huge Turtle instructional in the making, and until then you can check out the attacking from turtle instructional from Raoul at grapplinginstructionals.com. It’s mind blowing!

No disrespect, Question...what level/belts is this? Your neck looks really exposed to RNCs and neck attacks??? Interesting tactic...

Black belt now but this was at brown belt. Yeah that’s a common misconception😊 This is a step by step setup to get to the submission. It’s all available on grapplinginstructionals.com attacking from turtle instructional. There is currently a combo that features both defensive and offensive tacktics. Check it out if you wanna know more.
