Chad, thank you for taking the trouble to respond to my video. It would be interesting to understand what your sage comment means. I am at a loss to do so.

Lovely footage - thank you for posting! I walked the line from Newport to Cowes in 1970. All the infrastructure was still there, the short tunnel at Newport and the long one at Mill Hill, the buildings, track, stations - all perfectly intact, almost as if waiting for the next train. What a tragic mistake it was to close down almost all of the island's enchanting railway network.

Great to have a film record of this rare and quirky feature. The railway never found the money to build a footbridge or subway! Likewise, if a train was in the intervening line but the one from the outer platform departed first, then you had to climb through the first train to reach the second.

A very nicely edited compilation of the whole turnround process with good use of different vantage points! A nice historical record including little touches like shovelling the cinders and ashes out of the smokebox.

The IOW line from Ryde to Cowes should have logically remained open with the one remaining line from Ryde all the way to Ventnor and thus today the island would have had a decent integrated railway.

They had the same problem at Malton, but there the bridging unit was on a trolley that ran on rails and was stored under the island platform.

Beautiful footage. My one and only trip to Ventnor on the train would have been around the time this was filmed. So sad that it's gone, but at least I have the memory. I walked though the tunnel in 1970 - that was well scary!

No. Someone filming in the 1960s and digitising it somewhat later!

Brilliant to watch, i have ridden behind a steam loco many times on that line. Pity it is speeded up. I have subscribed to your channel, please have a look at mine. kzbin.info

Thanks Philip. I deliberately filmed it in stop motion so as to take advantage of a 50ft 16mm film magazine - there are 1729 frames altogether. (Adapted a Kodak magazine camera to take single shots and timed the shots by 'rhythm counting'). The film runs at 8 frames per second. Excellent video on your channel - very authentic steam sound!

@@tonyp8034 I did not realise that you filmed it Tony, I have happy memories of that line.
