Lovely movie. I’ve cycled many times on Shetland, I’ve done camping the most last years. I’m mostly there during simmer dim, around the longest day in June, and there are hardly any midgets. I’ve took different types of bikes: a low riding recumbent, a mountainbike, e-bike, and recently my Brompton. I pack very lightweight and compact: whenever I’m getting tired I walk uphill as well, or put it in a bus if I want to travel at the longer distances. Hope you will go to the west side since it’s very beautiful, and the weather tends to be a little bit better. Also Foula, Fair Isle and Fetlar are magical places to stay. Enjoy life!

Wow! We LOVED Sardegna in 2013 on our Italian 'Giro d'Terreno'... tour of the Tyrrhenian Sea islands. I bought a Sardegna road jersey which has had lots of use in the past 10 years. We spent two weeks there; not enough but we had overstayed on Sicilia. We did not do anything like 18 days of wild camping; more like 1 night 'stealth' and three nights in camping grounds. Expensive camping, cheap hotels and a back injury put paid to the value in camping. At 4:09 - that rock verandah caught me out as, riding north, uphill into a NW gale, the wind scooping through the verandah grabbed my front wheel and panniers forcing me around in a doughnut circle on the road. Very lucky that there was no following traffic!

0:20 - Oh a square lighthouse tower! We have one of those at Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island, a favourite place which I have now toured around three times in 15 years. Twice we actually stayed overnight in the lightkeeper's house, sadly no longer available as accommodation since the disastrous 2020 bushfire catastrophe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bauliKShmcuseLM

Great video of your riding and wonderful slideshow of images at the end. I have long dreamt of getting to the Shetlands to tour it by bicycle. 'Riders on the storm, there's a killer on the road' 🤠 Did you get caught up, called in as extras on any of the filming of 'Shetland'? 😆

Did you really do all the video with the Olympus OMD-EM1 Mk II? Even the on-bike video? That is a mighty hefty camera to be lugging about; how did you mount it for riding video shooting? I have a couple of larger cams but use the GoPro Hero 10 for on-bike riding shooting, because it is so lightweight, easier to mount, and I have a great handlebar mount for it. Heavy cams make mounting on the bike really unstable and potentially a great risk.

Hi, yes all the video was shot using the EM1 Mk2. A bit heavy in a waist bag, but fantastic 4K video especially with the stabilised 12-100 lens. All the video was hand held, one handed whilst on the bike - the combined sensor & lens stabilisation is quite something. The 12-100 lens is a bit of a lump...but the best "travel zoom" I've used.

Fascinating to see a different take on touring Sicily. We travelled some of this area in 2013 - the reverse direction, Agrigento* to Heracle Minoa, Ribera, Sciacca, then north via Gibillini Vecchia and Calatafimi (the Greek ruins of Segesta), Mondello and Palermo. Our journey across Sicily was about 530km but we took 3 weeks to cover it and see the sights. We were planning to camp, but gave up on southern Italian camping grounds, staying in 2/3-star hotels and B&Bs instead. A shower and secure storage for our bicycles were worth the 60-70 Euro price, and we really wanted to see the medieval town centro storicos, not beach views and wild camps. Free-camping is generally looked down upon by most Italians. Your first couple of days including riding through the tunnel between Trappeto and Balustrade was a route where we took lovely local roads to avoid the Strade Statiale and that tunnel. Great video of the roads and culture. * We had previously cycled from Milazzo via Novara di Sicilia to Giardini Naxos, then after some train hops to Siracusa, rode from Modica to Ragusa Ibla, Gela and Agrigento.

We had no trouble stealth camping and on one occasion we thought we were well hidden when a farmer appeared out of nowhere. He was pleased to see us & gave four eggs to boil. Up in the hills we were given more bunches of grapes than we could eat/carry. A great place to tour - hopefully we'll get to the east side of the island for a return trip.

Fantastic achievement (and video). Hoping to do this myself in the not too distant future. Can I ask, did you have a time when you started riding each day and did you finish at a particular time or did you just crack on until you came to a good place to camp?
@-cooling5958
@-cooling5958 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. You should definitely cycle it - I don't think you'll be disappointed. We tended to set off between 08:30 and 09:30 each day, generally aiming for a location where we thought there would be good camping possibilities. Finding decent wild camps was easy and we had no issues with land owners etc. The section on the NC500 route was much busier with campervans occupying so many of the more obvious pull ins. I hope you have a good trip. Let me know how you get on. Regards, Steve.

Cooling - thanks so much for your efforts to share your adventures with us. During Covid19 lockdown here in Toronto, I just bought a spin bike, found no value in the spin classes and happened on virtual bike trips on youtube. I had wanted to be biking in Italy and so started with your Sardinia tour. Now I've done all four. Think of the carbon footprint In I saved by not flying and all the time and money for the trips. I've started with 15 min spins just before my evening sauna and your 15 minute edited trips fit perfectly. Now I'll find some ocean wave sounds on youtube as I go to sleep and pretend I'm in my tent somewhere on the North Points trip. Thank you.

Hi Ken, Glad you've enjoyed the short travel videos. Never heard of virtual bike trips on YT but it sounds like a great way of lowering one's carbon footprint! Hopefully, if our internet connection is up to it I'll soon upload a few more from last year's tours to Iceland, Andalusia, & Scotland's Great Glen. BTW, I did feel bad about air miles used to reach the first two... Thanks & hope you manage to pedal off on some real tours soon. Regards, Steve

Glad you enjoyed it Graham. Like you, I had covered much of the terrain on trips to the area's Munros, but knowing of the many 4x4 trails I'd always hankered after biking around the whole Cairngorms massif. I hope you have a great trip! I want to do it again, but this time head up to the Fords of Avon, and take in Glen Feshie too. Regards, Steve

Hi, Thanks! The weather was very mixed, but luckily it was never seriously windy for too long. When it was calm the midges were terrible! There are plenty of B&Bs around so you could probably do such a trip, but post lockdowns they might be busy. Wild camping was easy & so many good spots to choose from. I hope you manage to get up there & have a good trip. Regards, Steve.

Looks good! I want to do some bike touring in the Shetlands. Would you say it’s do-able on a road bike or would hybrid tires need to be fitted? For supplies such as fresh water / food where did you buy / get them in the very rural areas?! Was it easy to navigate with a map or were there many side roads that weren’t plotted on the map? For camping did you ever get questions from landowners or did you just camp responsibly (i.e take your runbish etc!) over all it looked like a great trip!

Hi Ben, It's a great place to tour, main issue is the wind which is frequently energy sapping. Take a strong tent! Fine on a road bike, but better with slightly wider tyres, especially if you intend on tackling any tracks (out to Uyea). Most of the main settlements have shops, but we took 8 days of food just in case. (we weren't sure what would be open due to coronavirus). We got water in public toilets (at all ferry terminals). Navigation is easy - very few roads. We used online OS maps & Pocket Earth. Wild camping was easy (many good spots) and we had no issues with land owners at all. We're always very careful to leave no trace of our passing (other than trampled vegetation) and we always took rubbish to a bin. It's a great place for bike touring. Hope you have a great trip. Regards, Steve

Thanks Mike. Think we were pretty lucky with the weather - very surprised it was utterly calm on several occasions, hence the midges. Music choice is a bit of a coincidence! Plotting a return visit to the west mainland & a camp in the wild tract of lochans & cliffed coast between Ronas Hill & Uyea. May combine with an Orcadian tour.

Thanks Mike! It's a great place for a tour based on wild camping. We found most camps fairly easily, although I think it is frowned upon on the island. The roads are typically very well maintained and most drivers passed us safely - at a sensible speed & with a good gap. Wonderful coastal & mountain terrain, especially in the north. There is at least one place to camp (officially), at Lluc monastery, but we preferred a wilder location. We covered 320 miles & booked the Cactus hotel (on coast near Palma airport)for our last night (35Euros for a twin room) and we left our bike bags there when we were on tour. They also have a safe (locked) bike storage room just behind reception. I'd road biked on Mallorca 20 years ago & barely met any other cyclists: now the place is seething with roadies! Hope you get there for a trip.
