The $600 million figure checks out in multiple news reports. The bill (American Relief Act, 2025) was passed on 12/21/24 and signed into law the same day by President Biden. The "NO" votes in the House and Senate were exclusively Republican! After January 20, "relief" from the federal government (i.e. returning tax dollars to states in need) will only be in the form of tax cuts for the wealthy! Voters in southwest VA should realize this when they vote! After the upcoming s**t show officially begins we'll see if any money ever finds its way to where it is needed!

Thanks as always for the video updates! I'm sure a lot of that 600m will go toward engineering those creek banks back to where they were. “During a long, hard-fought week in DC, Congress had to navigate lots of moving pieces and complicated issues,” said Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, in a statement Friday, after the bill passed the House of Representatives. Griffith represents the 9th Congressional District, which was hardest hit by Hurricane Helene in Virginia. “I continually advocated for a spending package which included disaster relief. With the passage of the American Relief Act, we were successful in passing both government funding and disaster aid for Southwest Virginia in the end-of-year spending package,” he said. Virginia’s two U.S. senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, both Democrats, had also pushed for disaster aid to be included in the continuing resolution. The measure passed the Senate just after midnight Saturday. The disaster supplemental provides full federal funding to rebuild the Virginia Creeper Trail, which is currently estimated to cost approximately $660 million, and full funding of $125 million to conduct necessary repairs at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Another great update! I believe a detailed repair/replacement estimate for each trestle and each mile of trail would be very interesting. The trestles that have been replaced in recent years have been prefabricated and the sections bolted together onsite and then set in place. They have to pour new concrete footers on each end to bolt them to. If you think that the creosote is bad walking past you need to go to the tunnel on the New River trail between Galax and Fries. There is no way that $600 million is just to "fix the Creeper Trail". It's got to include other infrastructure in addition to the Creeper trail. CSX estimated it was going to take $200 million to repair all the damage to the Blue Ridge Sub Division caused by the hurricane. That's all those wash outs and bridge destruction along the Nolichuky and North Toe rivers (as well as other damage on the lines in the area). I'm sure everyone has seen the video and pictures of the tracks flipped over, road bed destroyed, etc. etc. etc. Thats $200 million to rebuild a CLASS 1 RAIL LINE. No way in hell is 18 miles of bike path going to cost 3 times that much. Edit: of course.....it is the government doing it so..... maybe I'm wrong and they really ARE that wasteful. If so: wow.
