@jamesgerrety2556 The tag says 67, though I’ve only seen cowls like that with the red stripe on 1961’s if I remember correctly. I should have kept that engine. That thing ran beautifully and performed amazingly.

I just got one and im trying to get it cleaned up and going. Now the carburetor on mine it looks like there is supposed to be a clip on a needle valve looking piece that gets pulled up when you turn the fuel adjustment to off. Can you confirm if it's supposed to have a c clip to pull that pin up?
@GearHeadJP4 күн бұрын
@TheChris196668 yes, there’s a push on clip at the top of the needle valve that allows the lever to shut the fuel off when it moves upward.

Back in the late 70s a mate of mine this identical motor. He had it on an old 14ft bonwood. It was affectionately known as the gangster boat. It reminded us of something out of an old black and white movie.

@ragdolltrucking they’re were actually a couple different generations of these. They were all good. Oddly, they got heavier as time went on, but they did run smoother.

When I was 7 years old I had this same motor and could go anywhere on the lake (800 acres) catching turtles and going to the bait shop to get a grape Nehi and a candy bar. Good times! I acquired a Johnson just like I had a month ago. I did the full electric and mechanical restoration and purchased a used 10 foot Jon boat at 87 pounds. Just two days ago I went to a lake to try it out. Far beyond expectations!!! 17 mph and 16 mph into a 15 mile wind. I am just as happy in my 60's as I was when a kid! More good times! Your video was strong inspiration. Thank you.

what prop are you using?
@GearHeadJP7 күн бұрын
@odie-v7j It’s a custom prop that I made from a banged up Michigan 2 blade. It’s nothing like it was originally and is tuned to this engine and boat.
@mattmoore28198 күн бұрын
Hey, I have one of these and the three blade prop is junk too. Can you tell me what you did to make a prop for it? I would be willing to buy on of you wanted to make another.

@mattmoore2819 It’s a Michigan PJ6 that I reworked. Added 1.5” of pitch, thinned and balanced.

A company on e bay has spray paint exactly the colors of the J & E, to touch up your like new 1958 outboards. Maybe the company wasn't expecting them to out live our life time. LOL It is a little pricey, but worth it.
@GearHeadJP11 күн бұрын
@TJD656 Indeed these engines will outlast all of us. There’s actually a few different businesses that sell color matched paints for this vintage engine.

They are a little funny looking! Love it though. I have started going through a 1960? McCulloch Wizard 12hp. that the original owner purchased and handed down to his son and grandson. Family owned all this time and Free! Really clean with good compression and spark. Needs the 'gear or cog' at the end of throttle linkage. Any thoughts on where to look for parts? I've got the part number, just don't know where to find one. Thanks
