My younger bro' got a Bootleg tape led by this back ~1972. Other gems included Only a Hobo. I never heard Farewell again until the first Official Bootleg Series, I believe. Unless it's on Biography. This song/perf top 10 Dylan for me. IMO he nails it here.

Yes, he too was influenced by The Leaving of Liverpool. Dylan's was almost the same song minus the word "Liverpool"! I love it though...

This is from some tapes called the "Banjo Tapes," because of the banjo in the background. It is rumored to have been recorded in the basement of the Gaslight Cafe in NYC in early 1963. I have this song and another gem from these tapes on my channel at normal speed, after ripping it off of a vinyl bootleg.

There are no equals to anyone. So your question should be directed to everyone unless that someone is busy imitating someone else.

This recording is not a "folk festival" performance. It's from a 1963 recording of Dylan and Happy Traum (on banjo and backing vocals) playing in the East Village apartment of Gil Turner. The session was released on the bootleg, "The Banjo Tapes".

He's playing a 12-string which are often tuned one step lower. He's probably playing in C but with D guitar formations.

Dylan based the song on the traditional British folk ballad "Leaving of Liverpool", after returning from a two-week trip to London in early January 1963. Coughing at the end of the song made it peculiar, hillarious and rare. Please visit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppWucqh_oK92jdU

@@SwinginPig You mean the same Gaslight Cafe shown in the film Inside Llewyn Davis ? Wow thats great. How long did Dylan perform there, also did Dave Van Rock really perfom there ? Cause the film is loosely based on him.

Mator 233 both performed there frequently in the early 60’s. It was probably the most popular coffee house in NYC then. I have a few recordings of Dylan playing there on the channel if you’d like to check it out. Cheers!

Mator 233 yes, if you look very closely at the first scene of inside llewyn Davis you can see Bob Dylan in the background. After Llewyn finishes his song and goes to talk to the bar owner, you can see Dylan stepping onto the stage to play next... It’s out of focus and hard to see but you can definitely see his harmonica glinting in the light.
