Also autistic here, and I noticed stuff like that 10+ years ago. Kuudere characters in general, a trope which Lain is so eerily similar to, people used to liken her to Rei Ayanami, are very heavily autism coded, with the most obvious example so far being Mashiro Shiina from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. Please note that thanks to facebook questionaries, some kuudere characters got classified as "dandere", to add more "personality types" alongside inventing other "new" dere types that are just subtypes of other existing ones. Note that if you want to make further videos on the subject, you might want to do a bit oooof research on the subject of Japanese ableism.

this is dope you should do an analysis of Roxas from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 he came into existence without a reference point of socialization. He learned it slowly through routinizing his relationship with Axel, then Sion, and then developed a heavily routinized lifestyle with his job “organization 13” to help cope with the aimlessness of not knowing what to do. It’s my favorite video game!!!! Roxas was the first character I could actually relate too within any media in general as a kid. It affected me alot.

Never knew that "masking" was the term used for supressing parts of yourself to blend in, real interesting. It's been a long time now since I've watched lain but this video has reminded me that I really like the scenes with her in her nightie, I know she's a computer program and all that but hey if you can call her autistic then why can't I imagine her as my wife or something like that. Man the early 2000s or like 1990s I've forgotten when this was made were such a time, I miss it.

"evil lain" is actually masami eiri while "wired lain" is what its called the jungian shadow of the ego. that part of the ego that evolved to meet unmet needs the lain at cyberia its a memory alteretion created by the knight, i like to call her cyber lain but yea, she isnt real

Lain is her
@Mrlolol77796 ай бұрын
I feel like talking about DID is difficult as the show implies, not explicitly, that some of her "personalities," are indeed not her. The Knights manipulate her by creating a clone they can project into the wired, or in some real world locations such as the Cyberia Club. We can also see this when they sever the connection between body/soul of her sister. Really cool breakdown but I feel like trying to diagnose her is unbefitting someone who likely isn't human.
@gatyunla6 ай бұрын
nice video! this is headcanon I've held for a good while too, namely because I'm also autistic and see a lot of the experience and symptoms in her and how she interacts with the world. but I also have OSDD - other specified dissociative disorder - which is roughly like DID without fitting the full criteria (for us, for instance, we lack the memory gaps associated with full blown DID). that said, I definitely read Lain as having DID too! while iirc the third "evil Lain" personality was artificially created by the Knights (*grain of salt, it's been a while since I watched the series through), the "standard" quiet, shy Lain and the Wired Lain both show up consistently from early on the series and seem to show the memory issues that go along with DID. I can also say that as someone who masks in given situations, masking is a lot different than another headmate fronting! different headmates/alters/whatever term of choice can have very distinct personalities, tastes, body language, tone, and ways of interacting with the world, which seems in line with the Wired Lain's much more confident, even confrontational attitude, and the "evil" Lain's sleazy joking manner. I also think a point in favor of the DID interpretation comes from when the Men in Black take her to meet their boss in episode 07 - during that meeting, we can see a moment where Lain switches on screen between her "standard" self and her Wired self, first displaying confusion and distress, then seeming to space out/dissociate before the Wired Lain takes over. different headmates can be more suited to handling different situations or even triggered into fronting by various external stimuli (social, environmental, emotional, etc), so it feels very fitting to me. at any rate, the distinction between the personalities, whatever the cause (DID or otherwise), at least was a purposeful choice by the creative team, given the distinction between them in production materials. (I think you're probably aware of this from how you presented them in the video, but just in case you aren't or someone unfamiliar reads this-) "standard" Lain's name is written in kanji as 玲音, the Wired Lain's as katakana レイン, and the "evil" Lain's in Latin letters, i.e. simply "Lain". regarding schizophrenia I can't offer a concrete opinion, since I don't experience it myself, though it does at least seem textual that Lain experiences some form of hallucinations in both the anime and video game.
@filmgoop6 ай бұрын
@@gatyunla i agree, that moment in episode 7 was what initially sold me on that theory. prior to that we’d see her attitude change depending on the environment she was in (for example using the wired vs attending class), but seeing her dissociate and having wired lain take over in real time was what made it most clear to me. and no, i didn’t know about the different spellings of her name, that’s so interesting! thank u for sharing! ^_^

Such a great video! Usually video essays that have low views are all over the place, not reaching any point, but the way you divided the sections as well as the introduction and conclusion of the topic was wonderful! I also really liked the arguments you gave, as an autistic person it made me realize why I related so much to Lain, especially in the first episodes. The conversations she has with her friends or when she asks her father to build her NAVI are experiences that I have lived, as well as the sensory sensitivity. Keep up the great content!

As a fellow person who is also autistic, I remember when I first saw Serial Experiments Lain when I was in middle school way back in the early 2000s and even though I didn't understand it, I still couldn't help but be into it and especially the character but I didn't understand why. Upon continuing to re-watch the show later in my life and learning more about autism, I felt like I finally understood why I felt drawn to the show because I found Lain relatable.It all started to make a little more sense because like Lain, I too struggled with socialization and making friends and did turn more to the internet for comfort as well as feeling that "zoned out" feeling when I was in school. I did hear the theories that Lain is just a computer AI and her awkwardness was her struggling to adapt to the human world and that's fine for the people who want to believe that but I like this theory more since it really does make the series more relatable and shined a light on a type of person as a lead that you rarely see in media, especially at that time. I've watch Lain about 5 times in my life so far and even though I still don't understand it, I've reached a similar point of simply not being bothered by that and just taking it more as a comfort show :)
