In a real sense capitalism is an accounting system whose objective is to produce profit. Invented in Italy in the 1500s. If you change the definition of profit to include the cost of waste cleanup, incurred medical cost, and the cost of reducing earth’s finite resources; it could work. Just saying.
@NickPappas193 жыл бұрын
He says elsewhere capitalsim is not a story of competing markets but one of class war, i.e what Marx said. So if you keep only the markets, it is not capitalism any more.
@xqt39a3 жыл бұрын
@@NickPappas19 Thanks for the reply. To expand on my original remark: Varoufakis is saying that the free market that was part of Adam Smith’s definition of capitalism is not applicable today because the distribution of money supply is not defined by the price signals of the market , but is defined arbitrarily by the Federal Reserve who decides who gets the new money. For example, under the CARES Act, Amazon received something like $60 billion in bailout. I heard Chairman Powell say it would be better to bailout home owners and small businesses but they had no way to do that, so they give money to the big corporations in hopes they will able to keep the economy floating. Some call this crony capitalism which destroys the free market and the price signals that go with it. Adam Smith talked about the “invisible hand” which today is understood as the price signals that separate the good companies from the bad. It’s well known that monopolies destroy free competitive markets but now that is mostly what we have . This produces an increasing wealth gap and leads to class war for obvious reasons. The word “capitalism” is an emotionally charged political word. To say capitalism is good or bad completely missed all the details. What I am saying is strictly speaking from the perspective of tax law, capitalism is an accounting system !!
@drakekoefoed16423 жыл бұрын
If capitalism had to pay its externalities it would be truly pathetic. the only way you could change the definition would be to regulate to make it so. dumping the garbage in the neighbor's yard is all that makes capitalism survive, never mind thrive

There are no solutions to our current predicament, as any solution that people attempted to implement would be doomed to fail. A final option for the Masters of Mankind would be the imposition of martial law, following another staged "attack" on the U.S., such as what happened on 9/11, or another staged "insurrection," such as what happened on Dec. 6th. Hell, they might declare martial law before too long, just to make their lives easier. There is one solution: if someone could develop some way of improving the human brain/mind and remove the need for superstition/religion. Religion, being many hundreds or thousands of years old, give an extremely outdated and grossly inaccurate portrait of humanity and human behavior, and this distortion needs to be overcome in order for people to begin treating each other as equals and with dignity. Also, religion is the greatest con ever invented, as most marks die never knowing they've been had, after giving a rather substantial portion of their income, and allowing their behavior to be modified by con-artists. No other organization has stolen anywhere near what organized religion has, and their con can never be proven. It's been magnificent.

Markets without marketeers? Maybe .. .. : "The digital platforms developed over the last twenty years provide flexible workforces, now catchily called 'liquid workforces,' to employers with a click. At the same time, however, these platforms might contain the seeds of an alternative to the corporation, which, if realized, would be a truly radical break in the economy. It is unclear that any of the platforms . . . .will exist in a few years, but what is apparent is that the digital platform, as a way to coordinate work, is unlike anything ever before. "Flexible workforces are nothing new. But that workers might truly be able to be independent from employers, without temp agencies or consulting firms - that is what has become possible with the new platforms. Workers can now do on their own what just a few years ago required participation in a corporation: manufacturing globally, selling globally, shopping globally, working globally. The corporation might no longer be necessary. The office certainly will not be, as the remote work revolution is finally here. Today, the same information technologies that allow capital to manage labor in new ways might also enable labor to collaborate in new ways. With the death of the employer-employee relationship - and the industrial economy - workers certainly need an alternative. "The platform cooperativist movement is pushing for worker-owned cooperatives as an alternative to the privately owned platforms. Digital labor and selling platforms make their profits from a cut of sales or wages, just like Manpower, Upwork, Uber, and Etsy all take a percentage or a fee from every sale. Worker-owned platforms, instead, could return those fees to those who labor or sell through the platform. Imagine a temp agency owned by the temps. "Where digital cooperatives might be different from temp agencies is in the ability to start cheaply and to coordinate decision making. Open-source platform software makes it easier than ever to set up a platform. In the past, the challenge for all co-ops was capital. Most businesses require capital to start and capital to grow. Marketing cooperatives, like orange growers, or procurement cooperatives, like grocery stores, don't actually make operational decisions. They make selling and purchasing decisions. For drivers, sellers, and laborers, different kinds of platforms could help them find customers - without extracting a stiff toll like the current platforms (or temporary agencies). Running a cooperative is a challenge, because no one, in many cases, is in charge. And that is part of the point. New technology, developed for other purposes, might be able to solve the governance issues." -----------Louis Hyman, Temp - How American Work, American Business, and the American Dream Became Temporary, pps. 292-3, 309
