I always look forward to your updates. Progress is looking seripusly good Any comments on roofing materials and techniques? As well as your own, I've been watching clips from Blodge and Maespoeth to Ropley and it seems roof coverings are tricky, with the damage from water ingress on any stock a 'biggie'. I'm guessing what works on wooden bodied stock ain't necessarily going to work on a 1950/60s metal bodied DMMU.

Many thanks for the comment and we are glad you enjoyed the video. As for our own roofing techniques we use Jotun pilot acr on the roof which is oil rig paint so it should stand the test of time all being well! For wooden bodied roofing a good lorry curtain material would work nicely and last a good while!

Thanks for the comment, we are glad you enjoy our content. We plan to put 51412 outside without a tarp to prove its water tightness and that she doesn’t leak. She will remain like this while we overhaul 51370s bodywork the units will then have mechanical work and testing before interior fitting and once ready for traffic they will have a final paint job with numbers and logos etc applied then enter service on the MNR.

Really enjoy you output. These unsung workhorses are going to be crucial to most heritage lines in the years to come. It's great to see the learning curve developing to ensure the worst design weaknesses of 1st gen DMMUs are being sympathetically ironed out and the techniques being honed to ensure thorough restorations. I still think it a great shame you guys weren't around when all bar three carriages of the Class 103s purchased from BR bit the dust. They'd have been a first rate example of just about every design issue you've mentioned over the vourse of the series to date .. as well as being the best proportioned of the breed IMO.

Many thanks for the kind words Howard. Our aims is to do these units properly once and they shall last a life time as they will be properly looked after too. A 103 would be a lovely project and has been mentioned a few times but sadly unless a lottery win comes through, all of our spare time is going towards the 117. Once the set is complete then we have the task of overhauling spare parts which we will also document on video to show the ins and outs of keeping a unit running.

Very interesting video as I am trying to build a 0 gauge model of a 120 at moment. All the descriptions I have read suggest the ceiling was white but from the video that was clearly not the case. I worked on 120s from time to time back in the 70s and in particular remember the TRSBs still had the catering equipment including Stotts boiler and fridge still fitted even though, with the exception of Inverness and a few Cardiff based units, they had mostly not been used since 1962. Good luck with the restoration of one of the most comfortable units BR ever designed.
