It seems that I am going through a Dupré phase at present, and what a great discovery this is. It looks like I am about to purchase the album. This work makes me wish that Dupré wrote a Mass setting like Widor and Vierne did.

Did Saint-Saens specifically quote this in the carnival of the animals or was it just coincidental harmonic and stylistic similarities?

The fermata at 1:20, with the lingering B major harmony is quite piquant.

Very creative and sadly underrated composer. I particularly enjoyed the use of chromaticism throught, particularly in the last movement. Very beautiful. TA for sharing.

The wonderful organ of Karg-Elert. I love it. I've played myself a lot of Karg-Elert in my organ concerts in Germany.

When i performed this B Minor Mass (which bach later expanded from this little gem) as a bass chorister with the Queensland Bachoir in May 1981, it gave me such a euphoria kick, {even the Soli Deo Gloria didn't negate it}, that i paid a visit presumptuously to the Premier of Queensland on the following Thursday. JBP had once been my dad's parishioner in Kingaroy (Premier aka flying peanut) & my Sunday School (SS) Superintendant.

Hardly surprising then that the security guards called the police, who kindly dropped me home to my loving but bewildered mother.... This really happened; truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, but i merely wish to emphasise what a great & unsurpassed piece of music diese H moll Missa ist!

You may have surmised by now that this was a hypermanic breakdown, and if not, be assured that it was. The requisite shrinks were consulted & i was heavily sedated with haloperidol & the shrink who was a fellow Lutheran pastor's kid recommended i be submitted to the psych hospital until i regained my senses.

The very thort of such incarceration along with the impact of the aforementioned H drug horrified my mum. (I was her first born) To this day I shudder to contemplate the possible deleterious consequences for my life, had i been admitted..... She was a very brave woman... (many woman are far braver than their dear men give them credit for). WHen she got her back up, the poor Dr didn't stand a chance.

After all that, i can only join Bach in a hearty "SOLI Deo gloria", and still tank God for such an amazing piece of music as this Mass. Yes we Lutherans are pretty Catholic in our liturgical sensitivities.... had i not broken down, i might've been ordained & gotten myself into far worse trouble. God surely blessed me out of that harrowing experience...

-Buxtehude in general sounds like Bach, but this one really takes the cake. Except that its actually that Bach sounds like Buxtehude . . . .- Edit: Had more than one tab open, and typed into the wrong one. Now I can't find the one I meant to type this into . . . .

These transcriptions made it possible to play the Brandenburg concertos with a D/A converter run by a PDP11/40 in the late 70s. A lot of typing was involved in getting the score into the computer, is all. All interrupt driven code for playing.

at 19:05 it kind of sounds like some sort of rock song, I can't exactly put my finger down on what... but it's something. Maybe Tesla's Love song, the acoustic version. Idk tho, this is a fantastic piece

Moroney ends the Chaconne with a Picardy third (major chord), unlike the score, at least this one. I realize that there are often variants in different manuscripts. Could that be the case here? (I don't object in any case. I love Picardy thirds.)

Rather the complaint that this piece is "derivative" or "sterile and academic" as 9/10ths of the garbage produced since 1900, we can enjoy a few more Beethoven like moments. Czerny scores with a somewhat lighter hand than Beethoven with a few more borrows or steals from others of his contemporaries, chiefly Rossini. As I have said elsewhere, these belong with the symphonies of some Swedish composers; Berwald and Stenhammar. They deserve a much wider audience and this performance is really good too. Best
