gamers nexus taught me what this was called and ive always found it FASCINATING as i have TERRIBLE vision. since i was a kid in the early 90s id take my thumbs and forefingers pinched together and used the lensing effect i noticed to focus on the scoreboard at school games and whatnot. same concept, totally different application and i was only 10-11 and had no idea the profundity of my solution as a child... make due with what you got. looking back.... public education is so insanely trash to label kids that are bored bc their brains are light years ahead but they dont know what they dont know, they are told their weird or defective and treated like problems.... cartoons should be illegal for children under 10 no joke. parental guidance necessary... if you can not stand to watch it WHY ARE THEY... only intellectual educational things should be played for toddlers for nap time, snag the ones that habitually arent sleeping and for the love of god help those kids. thats to the education system there at the end... things like that and apparently i used to do shock boundary layer refraction calculation visually represented in the margins of the take home folder handouts as the teachers would explain what they were to class (youd have to see the doodles to get what i mean, im sure id not explain it well).... not random doodles.... that is physics equations.... not written as such no of course not, im a white trash ghetto hick kid from pleasant grove texas.... but how it would be visually represented if i knew that is what i was doing. why does a kid with no knowledge of these even as concepts.... did i have the same conceptual understanding i do know with 30 years of inquisition and exploration into.... stuff. looking back i even took into account gravity (speaking as the kid here i mean, not looking back like wow i even got grav... just that it was taken into account as a variable).... i was truly failed by my education system being glorified daycare and myself for being a contrarian. a tangent but i just realized these things as i started writing what was intended to be a gamers nexus brought me here comment.... now im actually depressed. fk.

The American official history covering the Buna operation describes how a coast-watcher was able to scout all the Japanese luggers attempting to resupply Buna, and direct air operations against theses luggers. This must have made a massive contribution to the success of the Buna operation if true. Odd how it is never otherwise mentioned.

Clearly the Frank E Evans was responsible for this tragedy. The assigning of blame to John Stevenson, the commander of the HMAS Melbourne was a travesty.

So we had some sort of "investigation" that supposedly cleared USS Bagley of blame but they didn't buy that at all. How ironic that one of the rare times that Mark 14, 15 whatever, torpedoes worked at that early date (this at pretty close quarters) was in a friendly fire incident. If they had been type 93s they probably would've sunk right away and possibly in pieces.

I was an ETS in the mid eighties. I did the 1002 radar course at Platypus. the 1002 was common to the Oberon's and the Fremantle class Patrol boats. I'm not sure if there was an update in there as well.

So Labor gets in on 30% primary and need traitorous Greens to rule and so pander to an element in the room who 10% of Australians rate but who 90% want neutered and deported. Libs get more primary votes but lose on preferences. Horrific system.

Whike there is earlier reference to local coastal shipping being used to deliver "stuff" to Cresswell, is there any reference to the RANC tender - HMAS Franklin (Adele). This was a rather luxurious private staem yacht taken up in WW1 and then used afterwards for communications between the College and Sydney. This was largely because of the state of the road(s) between the College and Sydney. "Adele" was the last vessel my father served on at the College, in his RAN service.

My dad was there in 1945 at the Lingayan Gulf (USMC SSGT) and I was in the PI in 1972 (USAF Sgt.) at Clark AFB. Our base was hit by a Typhoon and a base fire truck was stolen by locals in Angeles City. Ferdinand Marcos' helicopter crash landed on our base. I remember Miss Philippines became Miss Universe. I also remember feeling for the Marines I met at the Airman's club on their way to Vietnam and seeing the hospital planes taking the wounded home. I enjoyed the driving range in Baguio

Taking Port Moresby would not have allowed the Japanese to significantly cut off supplies from USA to Australia, but it would have made it more difficult. The Japanese thrust into the Solomon Islands was the real effort to block those supply routes and it ended with the Japanese defeat on and around Guadalcanal Island.

To those complaining about Mike Carlton's comments re stokers, he wasn't describing his own opinion but rather the prevailing hierarchy in the RN and RAN. Indeed, ‘Stokers - the lowest of the low? A Social History of Royal Navy Stokers 1850-1950' was the title of a 2013 PhD thesis by Tony Chamberlain of University of Exeter: 'Every item of machinery and equipment onboard a ship relied on the steam produced by stokers. But far from being seen as equals or given any credit for their endeavours in the miniature hell of the stokehole, stokers became social outcasts. No other branch of men in the Navy has been subjected to such longstanding and deep seated censure. The negative stereotypes which surround stokers continue to perpetuate a disservice to a much overlooked and maligned branch of men. In order to determine the reasons why stokers attracted such negative sympathies this thesis will separate the facts from the myths and offer a new perspective on the men condemned by history as "the lowest of the low."' I have no doubt Mike Carlton would agree with all of this. You even see it in the classic film 'The Cruel Sea' (1953) when the crew join the ship, which is still being built on the Clyde, and as it's so small (a Flower-class corvette), seamen and stokers will have the same mess. 'Seamen and stokers messing together??' exclaims one outraged seaman. I should add my uncle, Lt. Geoff O'Shaughnessy (1922-2003) served in HMAS Warramunga (surviving kamikaze attack during the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf) before transferring to HMAS Australia for the rest of the war.

While in the USN and on the USS Ranger CV61, we visited Australia and I was delighted to see what I thought were Australian Charles F Adams DDGs still in service, as DDG8 USS Lynde McCormick was my previous and first assigned ship and I felt I had a good idea what those fine men were working and living with.
