I appreciate Andrew Smith's vid w/vertical orientation and CorneiliusLibowitz landscape vids, both. Provided they are pointed at a Sierra Ferrell show :-) Even videos with cowboy hats in the way, or the crowd is talking a lot, I like learning the atmosphere of a Sierra Ferrell gig. fyi I'm the type doesn't realize the features of even a flip phone for years 😞

Thank you for this. I was introduced to Patchen by Joel Climenhaga, a professor of theater, as well as a playwright and poet and friend of Kenneth and Miriam, in 1969, and I continue to regard Patchen as the most inventive, creative, and greatest writer of the 20th Century. The poem paintings and the readings he made with jazz combos only scratch the surface of his inventiveness. He certainly was spiritual and had a mystic side, but, while he left his Catholic upbringing behind in a formal sense, he never lost it entirely, IMO. Some of his work references God and his expansive love for human beings and all creation and his anger at our folly and viciousness to all of that is, is so Christlike and Prophetic. He passed two weeks to the day before our wedding in 1972, and Joel read his love poems for us. He could be not only angry and mystical and lyrical, but playfully, off the wall funny. There was no genre he did not turn his pen and brush to; poetry, novels, experimental fiction, fables, aphorisms, short stories, plays; in short, anything literary. He essentially created Concrete Poetry. I hope you do more with him and explore his life for your students.

I love that Lennon painting at the right with the biblical scarf, maybe a little nod at the 'Beatles are bigger than Jesus' remark from Lennon around '65/66. That would be great because that whole thing was totally blown out of proportion if you hear the complete story. Danny Fields (Warhol, Doors, Ramones, Stooges) was doing some articles for a teenage pop magazine and wanted to stir things up a little, so he wrote that piece about Lennon (talking to a friend) Later on he told McCartney it was him who wrote the article and Paul wasn't too pleased. Cause that whole thing ended with the Beatles not playing live anymore.. Danny Kroha & Gories are fantastic, hope to see you soon! -groetuitholland 💛

Oh my goodness! I just have to let you know that you are now my alpha example of "Seek And Ye Shall Find...On KZbin." So, I'm an actor, writer, teacher and theatermaker born in the late 1960s, and my entire life my personal aesthetic has been "alt-hippy-counterculture." I used to always tell my mom that I was deeply disappointed in her for not having had me 15 years earlier so that I could have been a teenager during the Summer of Love, or actually attended Woodstock. :) ANYway, because of my love for all things hippy-woo-woo, my favorite musicals forever have been Hair, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar and Pippin. I mean, obviously. But some of these musicals (Godspell and JCS mainly) left me really baffled about something, and I've never had anyone to ask. Why, I've wondered, does there seem to be a sort of faction of Christianity comprised of...hippies?? Like, how did two seemingly opposing lifestyle choices like that somehow come together? Or maybe the question was, how did a faction of HIPPIES decide that they'd spend most of their time preaching Christianity? And also, why did it seem like these Jesus hippies weren't JUST hippies but...hippy CLOWNS?!?! With face paint, and big shoes, and frequent forays into juggling, ukeleles and mime routines?! Godspell wasn't the only example of entertainment that supported this odd phenomenon -- I noticed it in other places too, like several theatre companies and touring puppet troupes that at first glance seemed to be all about my beloved rag-tag, recycled-junk-art hippy stylings, but upon closer examination, were all presenting shows built around Bible stories, gospel teachings, and evangelical nudges towards a life filled with Jesus. What the heck?, I kept wondering. This can't be a coincidence, this subset of the arts world. WHY are there Christian hippies? WHY are there patchwork, Deadhead-y clowns for Jesus? Where did they come from??? Fast forward through the years (to everything, turn turn turn, there is a season, turn turn turn) to last night. I was watching clips from the movie version of "Godspell" here on KZbin, for the millionth time, marveling over Victor Garber's adorable 23-year-old face, and I thought, dammit, I need answers, and maybe they're not far away. I paused "Godspell," went to the search bar, and typed in "hippy clowns for Jesus?" ONE video came up...and it was YOU!!!! OH EM GEE!!! You literally created AN ENTIRE COLLEGE LECTURE ANSWERING MY QUESTION!! Hopefully the length of this babbling comment conveys how excited I am not only to find this video, but also to discover that this movement is an actual field of interest for you -- that I'm not alone in my fascination. I literally squealed when you mentioned Hair, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar; several other things you talked about connected to experiences I'd had -- for example, your discussion of Berkeley, CA being a significant seat of counterculture/social justice Christianity in the 1970s reminded me that playwright and director Martha Boesing, who was a major builder of the alternative theatre scene in Minneapolis MN (where I live) moved to San Francisco to start a theatre-based street ministry called Faithful Fools. In summary, I'm so grateful for this video. I'll finally be able to sleep at night thanks to you. ;) If I was of college age in Cookeville, I would sign up for every class you teach -- already, I've made notes of other things you mentioned that I now want to Google and learn more about. :) Thanks a million, Andrew Smith -- you are appreciated! Have a great day!

Nice! Burn of almost tears along with big smile to poignant dark humored 'Day Zero' reference and sweet voice. We have today. For me, my take in facing each tide; I go first to being my own kind observer and gratitude, while acknowledging the fullness of all the past, present, and ongoing compost. Devastation to renewal is a brutally broken open to rebirth new life every day, by choice (if chosen), by real life on real life terms, no control by nature magical mystery. Though not an alcoholic myself, the impacts of pre birth through initials decades with immersion of generational addictions is significant, I understand my walk alongside is different. In any case, thank you both for sharing of yourselves for yourselves and others. You matter. We all do; with all our shortcomings and strengths. Take care to enjoy, even from within the compost. ♥️🙏♥️

That power struggles one is crazy. I guess they want people to see laws as divine? The founders went to great lengths to create balance of powers and understand majorities and minorities. It was the number 1 consideration in deciding EVERYTHING in the constitution. "Divisive concept" means a concept that: "The rule of law does not exist, but instead is a series of power relationships and struggles among racial or other groups;"

Christmas Stranded Sober Poem we were going to travel again on Christmas day like last year we were heading home from California today we were supposed to drive toward Texas but our broken HVAC unit had different plans yet the situation made me more than grateful for buying a house that also has a wood stove which keeps us warm when the HVAC is out & also reminds me of my 13 years in the rugged hills in the hollows of Dismal past Dowelltown below Smithville so by noon I was out scrambling around town to all the open gas stations & convenience stores for firewood yes I bought 15 bundles just to be sure we could stay warm until tomorrow yet now I need to find a better source for buying wood like when we would have it delivered by the truckload because firewood by the bundle was getting expensive driving from Mapco to Echo Valley to the 7-11 & guess what I noticed about all the people at the checkout counter on Christmas day mostly men one wearing jeans another PJs with candy canes & flip-flops on his feet at least with socks on this freezing day well guess what I noticed about them this thread that held them as one they were all buying lottery tickets & cans of beer or cases of beer or cans of hard lemonade got to nurture that drunk on Christmas day don’t let a little cold weather ever get in the way of staying wasted on Christmas day now I really wish this was a country song or a song like John Denver singing “Please Daddy Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas” instead of a poem yet what made me even more grateful in my own way even as we canceled our trip & needed 15 bundles of firewood just to keep us warm until the repairmen can get here tomorrow or Tuesday but I am grateful yes at least I am sober not needing cans or cases of beer from a highway gas station just to stay drunk on Christmas day

The split screen goes with the format I use. Hey Danny, Great to hear some of your stories of your music career and memories of Detroit! I went to school at WSU and lived in a 3 or 4 places down there from 1970 through 1974 before your time. I lived in the library of anold Victorian on Ferry and Brush. Then I lived in the house that was originally owned by the Ferry family of Ferry Seeds, a block east of Brush on East Ferry as well. That was an awesome restored Victorian. Also lived in a Victorian on Alexadrine and Cass or Forest (can't remember which) but it was right accross the street from the old funeral home. One of my old roomates, "Clearlight", got married and had her reception there. That was about 40 years ago, because my daughter Tara was a 1 yr old and running all around. It was a great space. Mike's grandfather built 11 houses in the neighborhood around Conant and Garvin. He bought one of those houses and we lived there for 11 years. It was on Garvin on a corner, now burned down and there's a grassy little gaden planted on the lot that's fenced in. My daughter was born in that home with a midwife who's still one of my best friends, Linda Honey. My huband, Mike went to that great artschool in back of the DIA, which at that time was called Society of Arts and Crafts. Everyone just called it Arts& Crafts. Then it became "Center for Creative Studies", Last time I was there I noticed its named had changed again. One of our hang-outs was Cobb's Corner and a couple other bars on Cass where my friends played bad rock n roll and that everyone loved. It was an great time to go to WSU, great blues acts, rock, folk.... Joni Mitchell and her husband Chuck Mitchell lived in an 4 floor apartment building on W Ferry, the 1st block off Woodward shortly before I moved down there. There were still pop-up concert in the old atletic field and peace marches.Oops got a little carried away here.
