Great sounds! I know the Proton has more and different features to the Neutron, but are there any actual differences in the basics like oscillator stability, envelope clicks etc?
@LeMorgue2 ай бұрын
Hey! I dont think i m the right person to have a valid opinion about technical details. I m usually too distracted with "what can i do with this" and dont dive into the minuscule details of envelope clicks and such. Wine&Synth has done a review recently, as he is a former employee of Quasimidi (if i recall correctly) he surely has a much better "eye" for such details than me. I thought Jorb had done one too - but seems i m mistaken there. I didnt see any other guy whos opinion i would value doing a review - so i guess you have to watch and check what you can find, sorry. What is that very high frequency sound starting at 0:32
@LeMorgue3 ай бұрын
Hey.. I dont notice a very high frequency sound at 0:32. At 0:23 there is a Proton Sound which returns at 1:20 - thats a lfo modulated filter. Aside of that there is a delay ( from Ableton ) in the whole track, thats on about 10% wet and has 17ms timing, but the timing gets modulated randomly by an lfo as well. That tends to "chirp" a little sometimes, tho i dont hear it at 0:32.
@nanocyde_artist3 ай бұрын
@@LeMorgue It's very high at least 15kHz, not a musical sound. Check it with a spectrum analyzer plugin
@LeMorgue3 ай бұрын
@@nanocyde_artist Its from one of the sounds that i recorded from the proton. As its just in this one (pad) sound, it shouldnt be related to my recording gear, otherwise the other sounds would contain that spike too. and yes, if isolated its not really musical. problem is - i dont know what i had dialed in for that sound.. so i cant even say if i used the wavefolder and or sync, or if its just the second filter as HP or BP with a lot of resonance.. But it did come from the proton, that much is for sure. Maybe i ve found a "sour spot" with the dialed in parameters, maybe the proton has a fault that gets amplified with the wrong settings.

Thanks for giving people a chance to listen to it being used so creatively, instead of arguing online about the pots or how close it sounds to an SH-5. I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it does, or to be as much fun.
@LeMorgue3 ай бұрын
Not sure about being really creative.. Most of the time it feels i m pretty repetitive and predictable, tho i try not to be too much.. But i m pretty sure arguing about pots or the closeness of the sound to some synth thats 40 or more years old with old through hole component is pretty futile. I guess a Jen 2000 didnt have the most sturdy (? unwobbly? ) pots back then either, and still people made music with that. I m glad we can get so much gear - clones and originals - for reasonable prices. I m no real musician, this is just my way of winding down after work. And i love it! And i m glad if someone enjoys listening or even just takes the time to do it.. These things are supposed to be fun.. And if we can share some of that its great! Cheers! 🙏

Honestly sounds fantastic. Slider response for LFO-1 rate is a little odd (doesn't accelerate much until the top half) but that doesn't impede sound design. Also might be something that can be recalibrated.

This or proton for first beginner ?
@LeMorgue3 ай бұрын
Honestly? For a first beginner i would suggest something thats small, easy to obtain for cheap, has enough features, but not tooooo much. Neither of them - Proton and MS-5 fall into these categories. Does it need to be analog? Then i guess i would opt for a Microbrute, if not - the Microfreak could be a nice option. You can achieve very similar stuff with both of them, but wont need to spend too much money. And they always make a nice addition later on. If these deem too simple - the Bassstation 2 is laid out nicely, so it wont be to complicated to get your head around it AND its analog AND very portable AND pretty capable. All of them have keys - i prefer synths with keys, as you can experiment more easily and intuitive. Ahhh... Korg Monologue - also a nice analog option, tho it doesnt seem to have that very rounded full sound ( at least not as far as i remember - i definitly need to pull it from the shelf to revisit its sound ). If you dont mind older digital stuff - a Microkorg should be available for cheap and has very nice sound, despite being digital and quite old already. The Ultranova could be a good starting point too. IF it needs to be either of Proton or MS-5... I guess the Proton holds more options for future use in connection with modular gear. The MS-5 would be the choice if you want that 70s and Roland filter sound, but then again i would suggest the Behringer MonoPoly its brings 4x polyphony at a similar price range. Did that help in any way? 🤔 Cheers!

@@eTERNIAN69 so whos the beginner then? 🤪 or first behringer? That would still be the MonoPoly.. Tho i guess most people would argue for the Poly-D, but i m not really a moog guy. The Poly-D is nice, no doubt - but i m just not the funky synth performer.. 🤣🤣🤣 Well.. right now the MS-5 would rank #2 on my Behringer favourites list. Then maybe the Odyssey, followed by the Wasp i guess. If i wouldnt own a MS-20 Mini, then place 3 would be the K2. Next one would be the Pro-One - then Proton, Neutron, Kobol, Cat, Poly-D, DeepMind 12 and Edge (sorry U2 😜).

So how do you feel about the Proton?
@LeMorgue4 ай бұрын
honestly? i dont know if i can give a valid opinion yet. feels like i only scratched the surface.. i tried wave folding, tried sync, filters in parallel, filters in series - but i m sure i missed a lot of its capabilities. i would have liked the filters to blend between their types. i would have liked to have an input jack for doing that too. two delays to provide even more "stereo" capabilities would have been nice too.. i liked the delay on the neutron. but on the other hand - some of my favourite songs have been made on very minimalistic gear. Warm Leatherette, Heimat by VEB Weltklang and so many more.. compared to that the proton is a hell of a setup to work with. tho these old tracks often work because of the character of the synth.. the proton might be toooooo clean for something like that. but the patchbay offers enough spots to inject some character or dirt. after all - i think its worth the money and in a few months it will be available used and the price surely will drop too. but with all the gear i have - i yet wouldnt say its a must have, but i might change my mind.

@@LeMorgue I don’t have a Proton yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get one. Those Behringer skiff monosynths are always hard to resist, given how little they cost. Thanks for your kind words. 🙏 I really appreciate the feedback. Then my little sketchbook seems to really have some positive effect. The Proton is definitly a very nice synth. Tho i still struggle with the CCW pots for the sub oscs. Maybe my perception of the pots is wrong - not fading the sub in, but instead blending from low frequency to high frequency, like a highpass filter. Then it starts to make some sense. Anyway - i m missing the delay from the Neutron. It was nice having that onboard. Well, it surely will make a great companion to your Neutron. Cheers!
@johnpaulpatton97864 ай бұрын
@@LeMorgue You have a very interesting idea for future developers with your sub osc idea. I think it's a great idea. As far as the on board delay on the Neuron, it has a tendency to noticeably bleed through unless it's bypassed in the patchbay. Many have complained about it. So, it could be that they left it off of the Proton for that reason.
