I have a R. H. front nose section from a early (59 or 60) mini mk 1 assembly. It lacks The separate "A" panel and resembles the new magnum panel, I guess BMC decided to make the body more repairable after a frontal crash by adding the separate "A " panel.

@@jimhall9624 the A panel was never separate on a saloon, it was a one piece pressing but was it separate on van and pickup models

They were both rot boxes ! I had loads of minis in the day and mk1 escorts, both over rated in my opinion but I did learn how to gas weld long before mig welders were available and made a fortune every weekend welding sills and wings etc, I would get my oxy and acetylene changed at the local scrap yard, there were regular customers for welding at mot time , people would even have their exhaust welded up !

At 5:56 are you spotweld only two layers together ? I mean the stiffener panel to the boot floor, but NOT the closing panel
@PWCV-YT
@PWCV-YT 4 күн бұрын
There are 3 thicknesses there. The bootfloor and the valance closing panel which is 2 thicknesses itself
@csakbencee
@csakbencee 4 күн бұрын
@@PWCV-YT Yes I know it, I am also restoring a Mini :) The stiffener has an area where it is not connected to the closing panel, just to the floor, right? Do you spotweld the whole closing panel to the boot floor at only this area ?
@PWCV-YT
@PWCV-YT 4 күн бұрын
@@csakbencee Ah, I see what you are asking now, It should be spotwelded in the 2 thickness area and in the 3 thickness area. It's important to spotweld near to where the subframe mounting bolts go through because if they are not pulled tight together they will distort as the bolts tighten which will crack the paint and lead to rusting in that structural area
@csakbencee

What’s the real cost to the value of that.car in man hours alone plus all the mechanical work and paint work. Most if not all these so called rebuilds that make these cars non original cost way more than the cars worth sad fact but very true

Retired motor engineer/tester here, are your spot welds spaced as original? There looks to be plenty of them.
@PWCV-YT
@PWCV-YT Ай бұрын
No, not all. Original were very erratic and varied massively. My rule of thumb is 1" pitch for anything that was originally roller welded and 2" pitch for anything else although, on a couple of jobs where the owners were very particular, I measured out all the spotwelds I could find, catalogued them and replicated them on the new panels

Class work again Paul, I have only ever owned two Mini’s when I was younger, would love to get another one as a project.. I’m from Epsom originally and there used to be a specialist Mini place there, I used to go down and watch them working on the cars for hours as a mate of mine worked there.. It’s honestly incredible looking at your attention to detail, you clearly know your cars and their little subtleties through out its years! 👌 However, not sure I’m feeling them 40’s sticking out of the bonnet like that 😂
