How could any horrorfilm be more terrifying than this single scene? We see 4 and a half minutes of the purest human brutality. There is no monster, there are no special effects to make it terrifying, just that brilliant camera movemet showing us a realistic event, that sadly can happen anywhere, anytime. The characters here don't say a word, they just destroy everything they can, and hurt and maybe even kill people. And suddenly they find the most breakable thing in the hospital: the old man. He is not crying or running away, he is just standing there waiting for his fate. This is the best moment when Mihály Víg's music could enter. It perfectly symbolizes the silence of the mob when even they start to fear themselves. Sorry for my long desciption, I simply love this film.

excelente cena creada en donde el poderío y la vulnerabilidad se mezcla y se encuentra y por otra parte la mirada de enojo. Maravilloso

I saw this scene in the mid 2000s, and it stuck with me. But I didn't know what it was from, and whenever I would try to find the answer, nobody knew. Granted, it didn't help that I thought the film was much older than it was, and possibly something about the holocaust, but when I saw today's Criterion announcements and looked up info on this film, I found that this was it. Looking forward to seeing it in its entirety.

Silent. A raid upon the weak where all we hear is the squeaking of boots, the battering of flesh, and the crashing furniture. This moment is the eclipse spoken about at the very beginning of the film.

Tremendous scene. I'm afraid that in real life, the angry mob wouldn't stop, even in the face of the utterly vulnerable and defenceless old man. Hopefully, I am wrong and Bela Tarr is right.

The violence in this scene with no dramatic or horrific music or human voices makes it all more disturbing. Almost as if the human beings getting brutalized were just one more of the objects being thrown around.

Unsure what this scene really means. Fascism or something? Yet I find it both haunting and disturbing. There is also a sense of distanciation. No music, no shouts, no gore. One of a kind alright.

It's a reflection of the hungarian revolution of 1956, but it's also a common condition we humans repeatedly get ourselves into. That Bela Tarr's power, he always rooted in the history but also transcendent it
@georgeharrison57533 жыл бұрын
I am not Hungarian so I do not know the historical connotations of the scene but I agree with your association with fascism. I think it's about how hopelessness, rage, and even boredom may lead common folk to fascistic violence. These people stopped only when they found the image of a man reminiscent of the holocaust and finally saw what they had become.

Why did this mob suddenly as a whole felt bad about their actions because there was a random naked old man? Why is the sound design in the scene is so bad? After watching the entire movie, agonized over almost total and complete boredom, this moment was just the straw that broke the camel's back. It is so meaningless, so random. That I just stopped the movie right then. I couldn't handle it anymore. It is impossibly slow and beyond meaninglessness. I've watched 2 more Bela Tarr movies: Turin Horse and Damnation, both were extremely challenging but in a way they had a better sense of meaning. In this movie I felt nothing. I gave it 2 hours of my life and got nothing back.

The movie is a satire of the hungarian government and so, where the big whale represents the government, and its a big show, but the whale goes wasted. i have to watch this again.
@knarfjen68968 жыл бұрын
Well within the timeframe this movie is supposed to be capturing I think the whale represents Soviet authority making its way into Hungarian government in rapid pace. It's no surprise these "revolutionaries" gathered on the square where the whale was being showcased and the exposition being the link between the vandalisation of this hospital and the protagonist who is nostalgic of the old ways. It's quite telling that in this particular scene the self-destructiveness of Soviet satellite states (the vandalisation of the hospital) is left unfinished by the confrontation of the fragile state theyre in and the past thats led them to it (the old man being nearly starved to death and left at the mercy of those who have shown none so far).
