This came out the year before “Gone with the wind” and “The Wizard of Oz”.

Shows how back in the day a man was too stupid to marry someone who was intelligent. Men are not just pigs ,they are also egotistical cretins.

The sets are more exacting than even GWTW. I am amazed this has never been showed before.

Theodora meets Mrs. Doubtfire-LOL! Hope Miss Dunne didn't throw her back out going around in that fat suit. She took a lot of flak as an American actress portraying Britain's beloved monarch but I can't think of any other actress who could have pulled it off. She portrays Queen Victoria in turn as imperious, pompous but somehow human. The performance is so restrained that no where at any time does Miss Dunne's natural humor, always brimming just below the surface, ever present itself.

One of the most endearing films of all time. I wish the whole thing were available to us somewhere. It's been many years since I last saw it. Such beautiful, subtly nuanced performances! Irene Dunne was very possibly our best film actress. Beautiful, incredibly versatile and completely wonderful in every role she ever played. Sophisticated! Romantic! Funny! Charming! Gracious! Mischievous! And one of the warmest most convincing Mother Figures of all time. Only Rosalind Russell could rival Irene Dunne for the ability to portray of a broad range of characters. Why is The Mudlark never shown on TCM?

Yes, an underrated and little-known film, quite a gem! And Alec Guinness brilliant as Disraeli. I agree with you wholeheartedly about Irene Dunne. I loved her in everything she was in. Still love to watch the old tearjerker "Penny Serenade", in which she co-starred with Cary Grant. Rings so true about what happens when a couple suffers the awful tragedy of losing a child.

Regardless of all Luise Rainer's complaining about MGM, her films are expensive, carefully mounted, well-directed, she's photographed beautifully, and this one is no exception. I saw the whole movie on TCM, and she's brilliant.
