This movie is a remix of "The Music Man" (1962) with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. It was first a stage play by Meredith Wilson. Check it out. "The School of Rock" did a great job adapting it to contemporary sensibilities without losing the outline of the story.

Fun fact Katie didn’t get a bass solo because jack forgot his lines for her so they just kept it in the movie because everybody did so good and they didn’t want to remake it
