Ambos cubren onda larga, media y corta + FM. En onda corta, de 3 a 30 MHz. Saludos y muy buen canal. Jorge M0LDW(LW5DX)

When I was 12 in 62 an Elmer gave me an R1155A and a McMurdo Silver 800 HF receiver. The coils in yellow boxes fascinated me and the Marconi had a magic-eye. In my late teens I put them all at the side of the road and a local ham in Beaconsfield Quebec was fortunate to be passing by.

Hello, I worked on this unit as an electronics apprentice in the late 60's. Bear in mind that I was in a lowly position in the department, but I did work on it and remember it well. Don't quote me too much on this but it was an update of a previous model, and the idea was to make it more up to date rather than a significant improvement in terms of circuit design and specification. In part of the workshop, there was a screened room, which was basically an area about 8 ft by 12 ft made of a fine chicken mesh where test work was done. The guys doing the 'rf' and 'if' work were of the opinion that the receiver could have been better, and one of them thought his homegrown unit had a better performance. Anyway, my task was to look into the screening of the digital display, which was absolutely cutting edge in the late 60s. It was early days in the understanding of the amount of interference created by sharp edges of logic gates and so on. Obviously, it was not an ideal place to have an 'rf' generator embedded in an extremely sensitive receiver!! Metal boxes and extensive decoupling on the supply wires seemed to do the trick. Perhaps you can tell me if it was a problem when they were sold and used in real situations. Raymond Peto

@jonglei3 ай бұрын
Hola Miguel!

Saludos.

You certainly are the radio king (LOL). Nice equipment. My receiver days went from a BC-348N, S85, SX-101A, Drake R8, HQ-215, and now the Icom R9500. I miss my HQ-215, was a great shortwave receiver. Had lots of crystals for SW bands and all the mechanical filters. Again, a long time ago. Always enjoy your videos - keep up the great work and be well. Rich, W2FKN

Hi there, Rich! And thanks for your kind comments. I am glad you like my old toys. I am always working on at least one of them to keep them all on the air in good condition, and always thinking about new projects. I used to have a BC-348N I got from a cousin that was brand new and wired for ac. Absolutely loved it. First radio as a novice ham back in Boston in 1956. Just had a dipole antenna, but reception was excellent. That was a long time ago. Now have an Icom R9500 and live in New Jersey. Thanks for the video - W2FKN

For a thousand+ bucks, it hought it would be more effective. That's really disappointing.
@jonglei5 ай бұрын
It works very well for me, but it does not miracles! (ie if you have multiple sources of noise coming from several very different directions). It is extremely important that the noise-catching antenna is similar to the main antenna, and (if possible) that it “hears” the noise even louder than the other. The separation of both antennas must be right, too

@@jonglei Thanks for replying. I have to do something One side of my property has power lines and transformers 30 feet from my property & the back side of my property as all the cable tv lines and cable router/transformer junction box 8'x8. and it causes so much noise.

@@sdkfz9famo885 Hallo Michael!

Hi Fernando echoing Chuck’s comment - just confirming your radio has a channel click VFO? My 500 has a standard VFO with tuning increments down to 10Hz Could the selector knob need a shot of contact spray?

Why stack the gear like that? There will be excessive heat transfer from the transmitter to the receiver. Capacitor life will suffer. Believe me, don’t stack vacuum tube radio units like that. Set them side-by-side, separated a bit. Allow full ventilation space above. -Thomas (Advanced-Class Amateur Radio License, 35-year designer of vacuum tube equipment)

Perhaps RF Gain is overdriving the AGC? Sounds like it settles down after 3 seconds or so.🤷♂️
@jonglei6 ай бұрын
Many thanks Chuck. Maybe it's that. Sometimes it takes longer than others for the AGC to settle and the noise to stop, and for a couple of times I have observed it doesn't settle at all. Puzzling! And a real pity in such a nice receiver.
@IZ0MTW6 ай бұрын
If is the agc try with very low signals, that wouldn’t trigger the agc. Use an attenuator in front of it for example. Is there an rf gain control on this radio? Is it doing the same on all modes of modulation?

@jonglei7 ай бұрын
Hi Mike! The 75A4 is a true classic. Of course it is excellent as a receiver, still nowadays if we compare it to modern radios, but in my opinion it has a timeless beauty and a charm that those modern radios can't possibly match. The KWS-1 is a wonderful transmitter too, and of great historical significance in that it was perhaps the first amateur SSB transmitter ever made.
