Umm, small point - you forgot to mention the extra $3500 you found every month to apply toward your $120k debt. Snowball only works if you have significant extra cash every month - you don’t get that by cutting lattes

So you saw financial advice that were prefaced with “men only” or “women only”? I doubt that. It was most likely a KZbin video presented by a man or woman and you received it that way. I’ve never seen any financial advice program or video that was exclusionary unless it was financially exclusive (ie by income level). One thing that may turn people off is someone in their 20’s giving life or financial advice as that do not have the essential experience & track record to be credible.

I’m mostly referring to late 90’s / early 2000’s magazines targeting men vs women and what their money sections looked like. We have really progressed as a society but I think we have forgotten what financial conversations used to look like and how that’s affected millennials.

Wanted to check this video out to see the route you took to achieve this impress win. However, I was turned off by all the gender, race, and ethnic inequality talk. My goodness! We can all achieve greatness. If I sit here and think I can't do something because of where I immigrated from or because my skin tone has more melanin, I will cripple myself into victimhood and insanity. If you're going to empower people, EMPOWER them. Quit giving them a crutch. "Dave's beliefs are controversial..." Get out if here with that noise 🤦🏾‍♂️

Thanks so much, Jenny for your insight. I totally agree with you on Dave Ramsey, I think his advice is good in addressing mindsets that we might have to adjust so it is a good start. Im so excited to see a young couple taking control of your finances early. Keep it up.

Increase passive income in higher yield savings, roths and other sources. You cant save your way to retirement alone and there arent enough hours in a day to work. Money doesnt sleep.

I was not from immigrant family. My parents were 1950s Midwest parents who came from nothing and retired wealthy because they started at 18 and 21. They never pulled me aside and told me, this is how you do finances. Like so many people nowadays, I have never been married or had children. I never had the accountability to budget and work together to build anything. I am so obsessed with youtube finance channels to normalize and level up.. I am partial to " vivian your BFF" I now wished i had had a partner to call me out for YOLO BS finances. Budgeting to plan where money needs to go and tracking it to make sure it got there.. if not...why not??? That was a game changer. Thanks for the video.

Yes what this woman explains but I have always hated this phrase. Though I have heard this same exact phrase time and time again, I will honestly admit the phrasing is vague so the explanation will change every time. I have heard it explained many different ways and totally different than how OP describes it. What I boiled down to be the best strategy is saving like she says and not accruing what I call "punishment fees" (insurance lapses, overdraft fees, late fees). Also to build build build your credit score because that will become necessary for financing in the future. Hardly no one buys a house outright. Even though it's cheaper to buy houses outright, most only will have a down payment once they want to start amassing equity and they get frustrated financing landlords' investments. But you also need the great credit score on top of the down payment.

My husband and I did the debt snowball first then after we paid off that first car we went to the highest apr. Once we paid the credit cards off we snowballed our car payment. I know Dave recommends selling the car and buying a beater but we didn’t want to do that. 😂 I still use credit cards but it’s only for points. We pay off cards monthly. It would be easy enough to switch to just using a debit card but we felt there were more protections when using a credit card instead. 🤷‍♀️ It’s a good feeling to not have debt and live within your means.

Its interesting to me, that as a man.... I understand what is being said about men being catered to "Invest, or pick up extra jobs." Where, I as a father of 3, feel more inline with advice given by women dealing with debt repayment. It seems much more realistic than typical advice for men. Lol

The thing that motivated me the most to not buy bs stuff while getting rid of debt was the mentality that youre paying more for everything you buy while holding high interest cc debt. Each dollar you spend is a dollar you arent using to pay down that 30% interest card, so essentially youre paying an extra premium on everything until you clear the debt. Also the longer the debt persists, youre losing the ability to invest those dollars and the compound interest they could earn so it becomes an even bigger loss.

Money advice is subjective, what works for you may not work for me, but it's always better to plan. I'm quite lucky exposed to personal finance at an early age, started job 19, bought first home 28, got laid-off work 36 amid covid-outbreak, and at once I consulted a financial planner to handle growing my finance. As of today, I'm only 25% short of my $1m goal after subsequent investments.
