Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!

I'm moving to Ams in a year to study at Uva, I already checked a lot of housing websites and fb groups.. the prices are honestly enormous. On the other hand, the city is indeed amazing and easy to move around. However, moving an living there scares me so much (I'm from non-Englisch speaking country). Is there someone who is in a similar situation?

Hi Camilla. My name is Miguel and I am 28 years old. In 2019 I was given a chance to go study at The AUAS in Amsterdam. I live in Suriname ( country in South America and once a colony of the Netherlands). We also speak Dutch here in Suriname. I went to Amsterdam in June 2019. I only stayed for 5 months. The dumbest decision is ever I made is to come back in Suriname and quitting school at Amsterdam. I miss it. I have a lot of family in the Netherlands. My brother lives there. Now with covid I can’t go to Holland anymore. I’m not vaccinated. I miss the student years.

@camillaelizabeth36553 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Unfurnished apartments can eventually save a bit of rent, but it is not very significant I'd say. Refrigerators are 99% of the time there, washing machines definitely less. But it really depends on the individual cases :) Hope it helps!

Learning the language of the country you live in is a sign of respect towards your host country and the people that live in it and are willing to receive you. By the way Amsterdam is not the same as the Netherlands. The atmosphere in Amsterdam can be great, I don't know, but it's definitly not a Dutch atmosphere. As for public transport: have you really not heard of the OV chipcard? No wonder you think it's expensive!

Here is another Dutch Perspective for ya: you'll have to make a decision: Do you want to be entirely on your own, and maybe get to know a few other expats, then by all means stick to English. Do you want to mingle with the Dutch, get a good taste of True Dutch culture, and leave those other expats for what they are for a brief moment? By all means learn Dutch. Even though the vast majority of the Dutch population speaks more or less English, it really is Dutch which is the native language of The Netherlands. Dutch it is and Dutch it will be. To the Dutch it is like this: OK you speak English, so you do not take the trouble to learn Dutch, so you must be temporary here and you must be on your way out soon. We (The Dutch) lost interest in this person. Or: Hey well so nice of this foreigner to learn Dutch, he or she respects this country and its inhabitants and this person obviously wants to mingle with us: let's invite this person into our lives! English is a foreign language to us Dutchies it is a way to talk to strangers whom want to stay stranger, or maybe to a person who really want's to learn Dutch but just arrived... Let there be no misconception about this: English is to talk to strangers and Dutch among friends! This is The Netherlands after all and our language is Dutch and absolutely not English, although to strangers we will talk English. By choosing English as a language, you choose to stay a foreigner ! And so doors stay closed for you! Doors that will open for you when you speak Dutch ;-)
@mariadebake54833 жыл бұрын
You're quite right. There's nothing I hate more than hearing so many students/expats saying: No you don't have to learn Dutch! Everyone speaks English here! Imo it's so disrepectful and arrogant
@dutchyjhome3 жыл бұрын
@@mariadebake5483 Exactly, and somebody is gotta tell them that they are wrongly and poorly informed. And that you will not be able to get away with it; just speaking English. Oh no, this county my dear expat and my dear foreign student is Nederland (The Netherlands) and one speaks Nederlands (Dutch). Just so you know ;-)

Thanks for sharing! really helpful ❤ Regarding the student housing I have several questions. For first year student housing, do you remember which budget category you chose so you get a studio? It says it is uncertain whether you will get private facilities, if you choose €500 - €600 category. Besides, will many rooms provided are far away from UvA campus? It says maximum 45 commuting time😂 scared Also, if I want to apply the unfirnished room for three years, who should I contacit with? Do I still need to follow the normal student housing application process? Sorry for so many questions(>人<;)It's like couldn't find any one talking about that... Your video really helps!
@camillaelizabeth36553 жыл бұрын
Hello Emily, sorry for my late reply and thank you for your comment :) I think I had chosen the 'most expensive' option because I wanted to opt for a self-contained studio. In my case I ended up with in fact a studio that I paid around 550/5570 EUR per month for, and it was in a pretty great location! I was in Amsterdam West, about 20/25 min by bike or tram. There are several options for UvA accommodation but never heard of it being a 45min commute (the furthest might be in Biljmer or Noord). For the unfurnished rooms, I am not 100% sure so I think it is best to call the Student/Education Desk of your faculty! Hope this helps, and let me know if I can help with anything else xx

@camillaelizabeth36553 жыл бұрын
Hi Luiza! I think that is a very valid concern you have, however, I really don't think it will be a problem at all! The city is filled with students (especially internationals) who will be in your same position, and wanting to make friends! I would definitely suggest attending the Introduction week (if your uni offers it), and joining any group chats :) At the end it is just about putting yourself out there! Anyway, finding friends is super exciting and definitely not as hard as you think xx hope it helps a bit!

Hello is there a waiting list for The Student Hotel..or its just expensive but accommodation is guaranteed. Also if a student is actually unable to get a room ..what are the options is it possible to stay in different hostels every 3 months for like a year Thank you !
@camillaelizabeth36553 жыл бұрын
Hi Tomisono! The Student Hotel usually also has a waiting listing however, since it is indeed on the pricer side, you have a much higher chance of getting a room, even more because of the current situation. The most important thing with any housing/accommodation service that have lists, is to be put on it as early as possible. Hostels could be an option, but I would recommend looking into 'Room' and Facebook groups. Hope this helps!
