Jesus, I'm an idiot. I'm known as the "typewriter guy" in my town, but I've never had one with built in spools (that I knew of) I managed to look up the ribbon size, so just ordered spools and tried to put them in as is, I've been searching for the right spools for a week, lol. Ty for this. It led me to discover my underwood SX uses the same style, and it works like new. Both are going strong now.

I appreciate your instruction but it is hard for me to see the installation because your hands put the ribbon and machine parts in shadow then you move everything so quickly I cannot follow your movements with your words. I see you have many compliments and certainly you deserve them, but I am just an old person with tired eyes.

I think the ribbon should go behind ALL the prongs at the back (ribbon vibrator and all) then get LOOPED around the prongs on the left and right hand sides. This adds a little more ribbon tension and stops the possibility of the ribbon rising up too much whilst typing. The original Remington manuals are available online and show a ribbon 'loop' behind made to the left and the right. Other than that, this presentation is nicely done.

Thank you for the video… tho the most critical part, when feeding the ribbon “behind the ribbon vibrator…” got really dark and THAT’s the hardest part to figure out. Hahah😅

I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I used many typewriter in my younger years and only recently returned to my interest in them. I have a question i hope you can answer: i bought a Remington Rand. Made in Canada. Cannot find an Se#… Estimate circa 1950s. At first the carriage worked fine. I could move it to the right at the end of a line (return) and it would stay in place. However, after i cleaned it it no longer does that. The carriage just defaults to the left position. The middle position lock for transporting works. I suspect i flipped a switch or something. Anyway, id appreciate any suggestions as to why the carriage no longer stays in the return position.

You can load the ribbon directly onto the core without the metal rings. There is a slot to drop a knot or grommet into.

Hi I went to retread my Remington Deluxe Noiseless and noticed I am missing ine spool holder cover ( The part with the hook that the ribbon attaches to. Do you sell that part and is that part the reason why when I’m typing the ribbon covers my text?

Thank you! This video was really helpful, I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long. Turns out I was missing one of the spool pieces with the hooks so I took a trip to a beautiful local typewriter repair shop and they told me they no longer make them but luckily had some in the back! Finally able to use my typewriter after owning it for about 3 years!

What about the eyelet, why didn't you but the Remington Ribbon in the first place....there is and never was a universal ribbon, the spool you have is a 1/2 inch group 1....the so called universal spool didn't do what it was sold to do and was a mechanics nightmare........your machine should automatically reverse, if it doesn't you have not installed the ribbon correctly

Not sure about oiling the pivots of the hammers. I have original instructions for a Brother and a Princess and they say clearly to NOT oil them.

This was a neat video. Thanks so much! One thing I cannot remember is how to put in the paper using the little metal circular guide that goes around the left side of the platen. I know there is a certain number you bring the top of the paper to and then you'll be able to tell when you're getting near the end by glancing at that gauge. But for the life of me I cannot remember how to work it.

I had this same question. I have a 1953 noiseless 7 portable, and the caps look to be the same. I've tried to pull the caps off and they seem firmly attached, do they pull off or unscrew, or is there a release switch? please advise, thanks!

Great Video! I recently acquired (eBay) a 1954 UNDERWOOD Model 150 Standard typewriter that uses this same exact ribbon mechanism. Thankfully, the machine survived its journey from Idaho to California via FedEx Ground with no damage, as the seller assured me taht it would be properly packed for shipment, and it wasI The machine arrived here with nothing more than a 2-foot length of old dried-out ribbon in it...there were no steel 'ribbon cores' with the machine...the ends of the ribbon were simply 'threaded' into the ribbon spindles. I acquired a new ribbon complete with steel ribbon spools from an eBay supplier, and the spools fit the machine perfectly. After watching this video, I much prefer to keep the ribbon spools with the machine.

Hi. I have the same model . I used a universal ribbon as well but its the smaller version it didnt fill the typewriter ink spool. Also while trying to change the ribbon the red ink got alot of black stain from my fingers. My letters are coming out very light or not at all . Could it be because I dont have a full thing of ribbon or the ribbon getting dirty from my fingers ? Last thing I cant see clear how you attached the middle part of the string to the typewriter I get confused at that part. Thank you in advance

Best instructions for cleaning and where to oil. Thank you. I have a hundred year old Underwood that was a gift when I was a teenager. It has DECADES of gunk on it. What type of oil do you use? Could I use the sewing machine oil? Where should I be gentle when cleaning my typewriter. Because it was a wonderful gift, I’d love to make it shine. Thank you for sharing.

Nancy Burrall ~ Sewing machine oil is very good. It won't gunk up over time and keeps everything moving smoothly. I own three typewriters and use the oil on the strike bars as well as the platen track, as he showed in the video. I use a soft cloth, damp but not too wet, to wipe down the outer casing of the machine. Following the tips in this video caps it off and is all you need to do. Thankfully, typewriters are not high-maintenance machines. Hope this helps.

hi , how do you leave the typewriter at rest when not in use, the carriage seems to be spring loaded to leave in the center( im thinking it will wear out the spring), but leaving the carriage all the way to the left takes up more space. I recently got an old typewritter (1937 royal) and im just figuring it out. thanks
