I own and operate a timber harvesting business in the southeast . in my area we have lost over 80 % of our loggers . No one is following us into this business and the average age of those left is in their mid 60's. If housing starts tick up there will be a real problem with supply . the logger has been left behind and when the remaining few throw in the towel we will all see the revenge of the old economy

I operate a timber harvesting business in southeast Tn. Noone is talking about the pressure all this has put on the logger. In my area we have lost over 80% of our logging companies and the average age of those that are left is around 70 years old. When the interest rates drop and housing starts tick up i think we are going to have a real problem with supply. what's going to make that worse is no one is following into this business.

Would it not be $7.08/pc for the 2x4x16’ if the price was $664/m? And $5.31/pc on the 2x4x12?

Guys, when accessing future lumber demand factor in current inventory levels (affected by a declining market) versus adjusted inventory levels in a stable market or price positive market. I remember inventory swings from high to low of 80%. We need Al Schuler again, he was the best at laying out lumber usage by segments.

US Doubles Tariffs on Canadian Softwood Lumber and Contractors Expect Higher Prices Biden administration moving to double tariffs on Canadian lumber despite already skyrocketing timber prices U.S. homebuilders urge Biden to cancel duty on Canadian lumber Dear Sir I must apologize but am tired of hearing supply and demand excuses as people are being manipulated in this type of old school thought. Please stop repeating fake news. The Top 6 lumber suppliers control the prices on lumber as a monopoly. Below Georgia Pacific is owned by Baily Lumber if you want to fact check. These are the people who are creating the lumber and housing problems with our president. These lumber companies lobbied and promised campaign money to the president to help drive prices higher. These are the Companies who you can see by profit standards (quarterly sales) are taking advantage as a monopoly to drive lumber prices high which in effect causes the high housing prices. OO we can play supply and demand but low cheap lumber would have kept housing contractors building for the last four years in meeting the demand. The bubble will most likely end with a new president that allows free lumber trade. Currently the housing contractors at this lumber prices will lose money when the lumber monopoly ends when we have a new president who drops tariffs allowing free trade of lumber in a democratic society. At this time we should just eliminate the tariff based on the lack of supply of houses and the monopoly on lumber prices until we no longer are behind by 4 years of house demand. We all should be allowed to purchase a house meeting our cost of living but lumber price monopoly has only allowed the top 10 percent to purchase a house. Please stop the rants on supply and demand and recognize a monopoly and price fixing based on company profits. I think you time would be better spent showing quarterly profits of these monopoly lumber companies and show all the headlines of the president purposely keeping and raising tariffs on lumber inadvertently creating the demand and driving housing prices higher. I assume you do not want to continue spreading fake news about supply and demand without recognizing record company profits, lumber monopoly and presidential lumber tariffs. Six of the most notable lumber suppliers in the United States are as follows: • Curtis Lumber and Plywood. ... • Georgia-Pacific LLC. ... • Sierra Pacific Industries. ... • Hampton Affiliates. ... • Idaho Forest Group. ... • Weyerhaeuser Co. ... • Quality Of Their Lumber. ... • Your Purpose For The Lumber. US Doubles Tariffs on Canadian Softwood Lumber and Contractors Expect Higher Prices Biden administration moving to double tariffs on Canadian lumber despite already skyrocketing timber prices U.S. homebuilders urge Biden to cancel duty on Canadian lumber

I wanted to get your thoughts on the effects of the Canadian wild fires on lumber prices and outlook. My hypothesis is lumber demand will be strong in the US due to new construction (thus housing stocks have been strong), with these fires in Canada supply should be effected and lumber prices may rise. What do you think of the logic, I don't know much on lumber seasonality and the complexity of other factors (labor demand, transportation costs, tariffs)? Thank you

Thanks a lot for that short summary. I appreciate the effort. I work in the German wood industry and I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept and the mechanics of US lumber futures including price ($ > €) and measurement conversion (mbf > m³). The big European players in the sawmill industry export a lot to the US when prices are good. That generally means rising sawn wood prices domestically. Thus, by looking at futures, I'm hoping to find a strong predictor (among other) for future movements in domestic sawn wood prices.

Just a homeowner trying to figure out when to buy a lumber package for large addition. 2x4's are $3.00 retail here in bulk. Need the wood mid summer, would you hold off, or pull trigger and store? Any input appreciated, and thanks for the great stream.

I'm trying to figure this out... Do lumber exporters use futures too? Or just traders/investors? If you have a warehouse full of lumber and you short the futures could it be a good strategy? Sorry if it sounds silly 😅

Anyone that buys or sells softwood lumber that has a correlation to the CME has the ability to use it as a risk management tool. Many outsource this to groups that charge a lot of money and absorb none of the risk. In my opinion I would learn about it internally and see how it fits into your marketing profile. I would be glad to give you suggestion.

How did you come out of the chute getting shadow banned so quick. This is really good stuff guys. You did not worry about stepping on toes and kicking some ass. Great points on the satellite network which I thought was not good yet. You keep talking about these things you will be dangerous to the same people that shut me out a decade ago when I got global press for my novelty, which became a threat when they realized my intention to cause a paradigm shift back to my youth when salvage was king. More millionaires made from salvaged lumber than lumber mills without the machinery, just human energy. Now people are seeing the true value as 50% of landfills are building materials. Great work guys.

Ooops, I only have a million board feet of wood, oh yea and doors, windows, flooring, ... mothballed from 7 years ago, gathered in the days of 25 cents a square foot for LLP. Great protection against inflation, but the warehouses are eventually a cost that must be considered. My research and development of 95% Pure Salvage building and moving away from AC electric throughout so as to move more off grid potential. Yes, where I am, in central Texas, people are showing up like crazy with California pricing in their heads. Money is relative in value so when people come from high dollar to Texas prices, it has doubled and tripled.

How about build tinier houses and use quality materials instead of trash so we create a new path to housing that is salvage-based? Toxin and import-free focused construction methods with more salvaged lumber and parts to build with drive the American economy. Why not promote that so as to help create the ingenuity and drive to alter code and allow for more downsizing for a generation unable to deal with the inflation rates ahead. Food will force housing downsizing as in the last depression and world war. More kids are living back at home as adults than during the 1930-1940 depression era that turned large houses into apartment buildings and multigenerational housing. Import limited houses will go up faster if salvage materials are allowed and help keep costs down.

I am not sure why there are not many views but I appreciate hearing your views. My inventory of vintage Long Leaf Pine lumber is a sideline specialty lumber, structural grade long stocks and fabricated. My 18-20 long stock of siding or larger dimension material with higher elastomer counts don't matter unless the engineers can use the advantage to reduce the wood and scheduling needed to design and build. Less wood when it is 5-10 times stronger... 10-15 growth lines per inch which is not being found unless you are in the Southern Pines. Structural strength is vital if you want to span 20 feet. My stock of vintage Cypress in sash form with hand-blown glass is not on the standard materials list though it is easily provable that the 1,000 year old trees of the south is hard to beat, besides sustainable but you don't seem to address the potential of the salvage market if we could get into recertification of the industry... once quite big in America.
