The stratosphere and the troposphere interact very little. The troposphere warms from the ground up and the stratosphere from higher altitudes down. The Arctic is warming, but average earth temperatures are remaining nearly constant. The most prominent theory for Arctic warming is warmer Atlantic Ocean waters migrating deeper and more frequently into the Arctic Ocean warming it and the region. This is a redistribution of heat. Global warming has not changed significantly since the late 1980s. In 1991 global warming was reported at 1.1°C. In 2022 global warming was reported at 1.06°C. There is no mechanism that would allow greenhouse gas behavior to be causing global warming because earth's greenhouse effect is always in saturation from the strong greenhouse gas water vapor and can't be changed. The greenhouse effect takes place within 20 meters of the greenhouse energy radiating surface, typically the earth. After 20 meters from the radiating surface all the greenhouse radiant energy has been completely absorbed by greenhouse gasses. Its further heat transfer is by convection i.e. gas molecules bumping into each other. At 1% average tropospheric water vapor over 99% of earth's greenhouse effect is from water vapor.

Very informative video on the changes in the polar vortex. Thank you! The many impacts of climate change on our planet due to human-caused global warming / heating are becoming increasingly harmful and deadly. We should have transitioned away from fossil fuels, all types of pollution, and other unsustainable products and practices decades ago. And now, we are only beginning to pay the very high price caused by the dereliction of duty, deceit and unforgivable sociopathy by various people in positions of power who refused to stop profiting off their destruction of stable earthly systems that have allowed us to thrive so easily throughout the Holocene era (a Garden of Eden time for us and for Earth’s current and spectacular life forms). Our recent and quite ideal average global surface temperature of about 14 Celsius has been heavenly, and, now, we are harming so much by increasing it 1 degree and more which is also beginning to accelerate with compound events, feedback loops and unexpected surprises which are primarily causing many, many problems (vs. benefits) that the science can’t even share and keep up at the pace we need to properly and collectively agree and react in all the areas we need to be. That problem is only amplified as well by the many who want to hide and obscure the facts many of the detrimental impacts for their own selfish ends.

I read that AA is still under debate, but I can explain: It's all related due to the specific heat of ice. It's almost the half of water, thus causing warming twice as fast compared with the rest of the world (c water is 4.187 kJ/kgK, for ice 2.108 kJ/kgK.) This theory also explains that large AA occurs only from October to April. because the temperature is below zero in these months. In summer the temperature is moderated by the Latent heat of melting ice. But this will change when all ice has gone. I'm not sure the climate models are aware of this ?

Great video for people who (like me) are disinclined to slog through the journal articles. So the positive amplification is when the pressure increases in the polar region, and the negative amplification is the steady state? Is this the same as saying the Arctic Oscillation is positive?

I think the Sun is to blame for polar jet weakness or it's movement into the southern latitudes...The Sun is entering a grand minimum which will help reduce higher temps caused by global industry, cars etc...basically we are polluting ourselves terribly. Mankind is shitting where it eats. SMH.

Ah carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Are we running a race as to which one will work faster? Or will these two scenarios will cancel each other out. You Humons are wacked out, let's keep arguing about it and do nothing, and see what happens.

This process is a confusing/ complex enough process to explain, and I think this graphic (specifically the graphic/ video) is inaccurate, thus making it more confusing. A surge of warm air from the TROPOSPHERE ("surface") moves poleward, and then UPWELLS into the arctic stratosphere, thus displacing the "bowl" of cold stratospheric air & subsequently the polar vortex. In the video, you show everything just kind of doing a shuffle and it doesn't really make sense, especially when the red dots (warm air) in the STRATOSPHERE just randomly move over the pole, which doesn't happen.

I also found it lacking, however there are very few graphics/animations on this topic. Sudden Stratospheric Warming is a difficult concept to visualize. It is perhaps even more difficult to explain to the general public (non atmospheric scientists). I commend the author on the attempt, and hope that he works to improving future animations on the topic.

What marks the division between the troposphere and the stratosphere is a temperature inversion when the air temperatures stops going lower and starts going higher. The coldest air is the line between the two systems.

@douglasengle2704 Yes, I'm talking more about heights: As the warm trophespheric air rises up/ expands due to the anomalous warm air, it displaces the cold stratospheric air above it

@@ChrisCoignet You've got a horrible situation where people, mostly science dyslexic law school granules like Al Gore, that are making normal well known science such as earth's greenhouse effect that is always in saturation from water vapor into something it is not, a system that can be overall change, which it can't.

Okay, after reading some of the comments it appears that there is a thirst for more information. So, "cause & effect." There has been multiple, complicated processes of Arctic Amplification that will adversely affect our backyard in the Northern Hemisphere. In this case, a December 31, 2018 Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event resulted in a Polar Vortex Split (Not a Polar Vortex Disruption or a "wobble" in the Polar Vortex). In early January 2019, Climatologist communicated a forecast that we can expect four to 8 weeks of intense, recurrent wintry weather events. They were right, two months of it. If an individual has not taken college level Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Geology, then Global Climate Change is fundamentally unreal for them. I understand that, but it doesn't make Global Climate Change is unreal. A person may debate, lobby for or against an idea or put a political spin on attribution study results, (BUT) one cannot debate, set conditions or alter the basic laws of Physics or the laws of Chemistry. More recently, the Catastrophic flooding in the Midwest: "cause & effect" is simply an example of the Clausius/Clapeyron Relationship (equation) forecasting the moisture holding capacity of the atmosphere is increased by ( about, the equation is not linear ) 7% for every 1 degree Celsius average global temperature rise. Where it has rained before, it will flood. This is not a fluke, it is a trend. And people need to start talking about it...like the "Mystery" of the untaxed negative externalities of our fossil fuel energy companies have enjoyed for decades.

@dougtanner263
@dougtanner263 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the delay: about two weeks after your question. One of the most trusted names in the Northern Hemisphere in regards to accurate winter weather forecasting is Dr. Judah L. Cohen. To answer your question, I would stay tuned to: Welcome, Dr. Judah L. Cohen. The click on the. AER. Arctic Oscillation Analysis and forecasts. It is updated about every two weeks, generally on Tuesday afternoon(s), sooner if extreme weather events occur. Looks like the next (possible) SSW, Sudden Stratospheric Warming event is expected around mid-January 2020. Just google that or check out the latest information from Dr. Cohen's site. An aside: when if comes to the facts around global climate change...there is simply an "energy imbalance." The (new) abnormal, retained HEAT as the form of energy, is not gonna go away very soon, even if we stopped burning all fossil fuels, today. Consider getting active in your community, promoting Adaptation and Mitigation of Environmental Change and Extreme Weather Events. Lives, livelihoods, man made infrastructures and ecosystem infrastructures are at risk. Remember: Premature Death is a once in a lifetime experience. Always keep in mind the children and grandchildren of this earth when as adults we make daily choices. I wish our government started working to combat global climate change two or three decades ago. I know James Hansen would agree with that. Be safe.

That explanation of the effect is pretty clear... but that does not suggest a cause of this phenomena being triggered in the first place. Would it be fair to ask what part you though the HAARP generators in Alaska and other parts of the world might be playing in this scenario.

See, I was going through an article which suggests some factors responsible to it. The warming trend in the Arctic is almost twice as large as the global average in recent decades. This is known as Arctic amplification. Changes in cloud cover, increases in atmospheric water vapour, more atmospheric heat transport from lower latitudes and declining sea ice have all been suggested as contributing factors.
