I made this yesterday, taste great but not quite like a concrete cake. I found the vanilla extract unusual almost as if it didnt belong...the search goes on

Brummy here too, tried a few recipes and non were like the old school favourite, fingers crossed this is the 1. I will be back to update 👍🏻 **update** didn’t go rock hard like the old favourite

This is chocolate concrete cake but a lot of them do not use vanilla extract I was told that it was made by somebody or invented by somebody that was from Birmingham but I cannot remember her name this is a nice interpretation of the cake
@FeastOurEyes8 ай бұрын
Hi, yes we have always been told this was made by someone in Birmingham aswell. This recipe is an adaptation from my Nan who would make this in primary schools in the 1970s in Birmingham.

I have a similar recipe but decided to try this because of the positive comments. However this is not chocolate concrete. Firstly you should use plain flour and not self raising. Secondly you don’t need the egg. This recipe is a cake like brownie. The clue is in the name ‘concrete’ should be hard.

Is it suppose to be self raising flour. I always thought it’s plain flour

Hi, yes self raising flour is what we have always used!

Gee does this bring back memories for me, We had this for school dinners as desert in 1958 at St Johns Primary School in Cove Hampshire, I have lived in Australia since 1962 and for me today in 2024 I started to think it never existed. Certainly, will be having a go at making it. It was a real favorite very rarely could you get seconds and the pink custard (strawberry flavoured?) made it taste like a cherry ripe bar.

I normally don't write comments but I thought have to for this amazing concrete chocolate.. I've made so many other concrete cookies etc but I have to say.. This tops them all. It was so amazing that my boys loved it specially with custard. That extra kick with the extra melted butter definitely did the job... Thank you to your grandmother ❤. Recipe definitely a keeper 👌

I made think but I feel like it’s like a crunchy sponge . Prefer the eggless plain flour ones that reminisce school ones as they’re like shortbread However only issue is when they cook they’re inedible as in way too hard and the recipe here with Sf flour and egg means you can enjoy all day as it doesn’t get too hard

Bit late here but I’ve just given this a go because it looks the most like what we had in school! Mine was very sticky and not crumbly like yours before baking, not sure how it’s turned out yet as it’s still in the oven but I’m wondering if you have any advice for the dough if it is too sticky? Looks awesome by the way.
@nadia72612 жыл бұрын
How did it turn out ?
@FeastOurEyes2 жыл бұрын
Hi , thank you! I would also say if it was slightly sticky it may be fine as it should go crumbley once baked and cooled, if it's too wet though you can add a small amount of flour but not too much as this may change the end consistency.
@TheBertmern2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the advice I may try that next time, it turned out really nice but not crumbly like chocolate concrete should be, mine was very cakey in texture, I was also wondering about using plain flour instead of self raising but not sure if that would change much for the cakey texture I ended up with. If and when I try it again with more flour I’ll let you know!

@FeastOurEyes2 жыл бұрын
Hi, swapping margarine for butter was the main swap from the recipe from my nan, the ratios for sugar , flour butter was the same, I would say I add slightly more vanilla extract as well but both are optional.

Thank you so very much for this recipe. It's spot on! Tried other recipes that didn't quite work out for me. I was fed up of trying. Thought I give this one a go... Just made it and it turned out exactly like the one in school 😋 Could you possibly do the vegetable samosas we had at school? Anyone else remember them?? Btw, just subscribed. Will try out your other recipes too x
