I wish I would’ve seen your last two videos before today…I was out there last Saturday (12/7) and tried the glide bait in the morning with no success. I did find a pile of small pups in the afternoon. I sure appreciate your videos. I use your instruction almost exclusively. If only I lived closer.

I haven't seen the 28 inches. i thought it was 25. Regardless, biologists have book learning, I suppose, but anglers and especially anglers that fish over 200 days a year also know a thing or two. Although i haven't been targeting large lake trout for too many years, it seems to me that not all lake trout grow up to be really large. Some seem to stay in the five to 10-pound class and don't get any bigger. Why that is, I don't know. However, I don't believe the biologist know either. So, I will continue to release 99 percent of the lake trout over 25 not 28 inches that I catch. It just seems to me that larger lakers are becoming fewer and fewer, and I just want to protect the fishery from too many biological hands messing with Mother Nature.

Don, what do you think about the new Lake Trout regs removing all limits for fish 28" and smaller. Should we taking more of the big fish out of the system too?
@doafish4 күн бұрын
I went out at Noon with my grandson and had a ball. we caught three very nice lake trout and my grandson caught an 8-pound cutthroat on a glide bait. But, in the fog, it was a miserable last three days. My rods were custom made by a guy that no longer makes them. However, there are quite a few people in the Ogden area that do the same thing. Personally, i would look at Colton Christenson's new 48-inch rods available at Sportsman's or online at his Facebook page. If you are still around, i will be launching at Lucerne around 10 this morning.

Another fun video Don, I was putting my time on the water at FG yesterday, Friday, and it was cold and foggy still. It’s tough to learn a lake that is a 3 hour drive away. We hooked one big laker but lost it, caught a few pups and the rainbows were very cooperative. Only saw 4 or 5 boats all day. I jigged a lot using my normal spinning rods, I see why you like the shorter rods for jigging heavier presentations. Remind me where you purchased them. Thanks again for the info in your videos.

If you are talking about Flaming Gorge Reservoir... I have not gone specifically for brown trout for about 15 years. I used to catch a lot of great browns in the Buckboard area in September. Having said that, I catch a few "silver" browns from time to time. And, i do catch significant numbers of large cutthroats and rainbows (between 5 and 10 pounds) each fall. In fact, my grandson and I were out yesterday and he caught a 26-inch 8 pound cut on a glide bait. How about you? Do you target browns in the lake?

Yes, and I am slow trolling. But the best fish have been coming while retrieving my lures.
@doafish7 күн бұрын
Right now as the fish are getting hungry and recovering from the spawn, I personally have caught three times as many lakers while retrieving ... so far. If you think about what I said, for the next week or so (while the fish recover from the spawn) I think the "best" play is to cast and retrieve. Just my opinion.

It’s interesting and informative fishing With Don, as he ALWAYS follows the rules to the T. He doesn’t put a line in the water until the exact time to start fishing. He also ALWAYS catches the fish in the mouth. As many many others around him fishing are obviously snagging them intentionally. Thanks Don for a great experience the past few days

would not fishing at night in the summer be good for lakers and rainbows as well?
@doafish25 күн бұрын
Absolutely! However, most people don't fish at night in the summer simply because it doesn't get dark until 9:30 or 10:00 pm and if they have been enjoying the reservoir during the day, they are tired and simply want to sleep. The times I have fished for burbot, specifically, at night, I have done very well.
@doafish26 күн бұрын
i imagine it would be IF you are trying to fish where the lakers are spawning. We did not. and have not since the date in which we cannot fish after sunset anywhere near where lakers spawn. We were in Wyoming and until the lake trout spawn is over, we will continue to fish for burbot where it is totally legal to fish at night. Thanks for the comment.

Nighttime best time to snag spawning lake trout
@BritzFishing26 күн бұрын
Awesome video! Might give it a shot this weekend. Any tips for types of areas to look for this time of year?
@doafish26 күн бұрын
If you want the larger lake trout, just go into the back of Lucerne and look for the boats circling each other. The area is about mid way from the south cliffs and the north shore. you are looking for 55 to 80 feet of water. Then, remember to "finesse" the bites with your pout bombs. And then, be patient.. This weekend, fishing opens between 7:06 to 7:12, Just look at "normal" sunrise and subtract 10 minutes for being in Daggett County. the same is true for sunset, around 5:00 and change. Good Luck!

Thanks for another great video. I just got my first real fishing boat and am excited to take it up to the Gorge. When do you switch from jigging the Pout Bombs to casting or trolling the glide baits? Based on your videos I have purchased both lures, but I don’t think I’ll get up there until mid December. Also do you use a swivel with the Pout B? Thanks again for the instructions in your videos. Super helpful for a newbie like myself.

I usually switch to glide baits sometime in early December. No, I don't use a swivel with the pout bomb. I just use a split ring. Thanks for watching and good luck with your new boat.

Are the other 3 boats snagging them or catching them in the mouth
@doafishАй бұрын
Not necessarily. The white boat with the tow guys, yes, but they have smaller treble hooks and don't to too much damage. The folks in the bass boat don't purposely snag. They are very good anglers. I try not to be hard on any of them because in all candor, I truly believe they don't know there is a better way to catch these fish on the spawn. The pout bombs are there in the store. Go to the back room, turn to the right and go to the front corner by the locked door. They are on the top two displays in all the best colors.

I have a theory I’m curious your thoughts on. I’m not so burbot (or other fish) see color at night. I think at night time they just see shades of gray or light… or the glow. Therefore I usually use the natural glow over any other colored glow product because it glows brighter and longer than the colors. Never been able to find any more success with any color over the natural glow. Obviously this isn’t true in the daytime, but do you think color makes any difference when we’re talking nighttime glow?
@doafishАй бұрын
Ok, I agree that natural glow is a very good choice for burbot. However, burbot "see' as well as "feel" the bait. There are a few videos from the mid-west that show how the barbel on the bottom of their lips. they actually "feel" the bait before they eat it. So, there you go. Good theory and I am NOT going to say it's wrong, but I think they see and feel a lot more than we give them credit for. Thanks for the comment
@ronlee597Ай бұрын
I too have caught more on natural glow vs on colored glows.

I don’t think people snag fish,I give people credit.I don’t think it’s good to imply people are criminals
@doafish2 ай бұрын
While I appreciate your comment, you simply don't have a clue as to what you are saying. Have you been out on the gravel pit for the last decade as I have? And, if so, are you blind? These well-meaning anglers are NOT "officially" breaking any law because they are in fact "attempting" to entice a fish to bite. I get that. Many anglers that "snag" more lake trout (during the spawn) than catch them in the mouth are good people. Many of them are my friends. And, they can continue to do exactly what they have been doing without any threats or problems on my part. What I am trying to do is simply show people a "better" way to fish during the spawn. And, dozens of people I have helped, report back that they are now catching most if not all the fish they boat "in the mouth". Why in the world would that be a problem for you? People have and are teaching ME how to better care for lake trout that I catch whether during the spawn or at other times, and I gratefully accept their advice and try to do better. That is all I am doing. Criminal? No way. A better way to fish? I think so. But, you can do whatever you want. It is still a free country.
@briggs13a2 ай бұрын
The lake seems to have too many lake trout according to the scientists.I worry about my own ethics not others,why not keep every lake trout you catch ?Thats what the FG wants.Preach all you want it’s a free country,I just won’t watch again Karen.
@JLBranson2082 ай бұрын
Don, great content and thanks for the video. Avoiding snagging Lake Trout also avoids potentially killing a trophy fish due to over exhaustion while foul hooked, among other things. Great to learn from your experience how to get the fish to the boat and out of the lake if it’s a pup, or back in the water safely if it’s a trophy. Thanks for all you do. Keep them coming!
