The spirit of satellite TV of that time period is still alive. You just need a V8 Receiver which are somewhat cheap and you can get a dish secondhand. And its free service, access to multiple satellites in space but you can only access unscrambled channels (forget about getting the likes of Sky One or Cinemax let alone VH1 or Bravo). You love this cost cutting alternative if youre into public broadcasting from other countries, home shopping channels, lesser sports and other niche programming.

I was always wondering how the expansion bay on theese things worked, could ypu swap videocipher decoder for something else (Nagravision or VideoCrypt maybe) if u wanted? Or maybe digital tuner As it looked like the videocipher box had its own overlay separate from the main receiver

Was always jealous of the rich farm kids who had one of these growing up. Got to mess around with one of the big rotating setups once or twice as a kid - before internet video, and when you could only get 2 tv channels over the air, being able to see international TV was mind-blowing

This is C-Band television broadcasting to local tv channels across America. Having C band back in the day was awesome. I had friends who could pick up C band tv from America satellites to New Zealand and Australia. The dish span was over 8 meters plus. But rain and storms knocked out the channels.

There were plenty of wild feeds on Ku-Band as well (B4, W8 (GE1 Ku), K2 (KC on 4DTV), S8, R3 etc....), the Ku side of Anik E2 (A2) consisted of StarChoice and ExpressVu (which used Nagravision software) programming.

I had a 4DTV sat/receiver. Ultimately stopped using because of maintenance. Whatever happened to it? And is there a similar replacement with similar experience?

The Weather Channel was the last Videocipher II+ (analog video, digital audio) channel on C-Band, ending in 2014. Watching a scrambled VCII channel you could see the H/V sync pulses replaced with digital data. Digicipher II channels were available for several years longer. But at this point all the programming companies (like NPS) have long ago closed down. At the end, they were recommending you switch to Dish or DirecTV. And now C-Band itself is mostly gone. Over half the band has been repurposed (sold off to the highest bidder) for 5G cellular. At least the FCC is kicking back some money to the remaining users to fund the repack. C-Band used to be 3.7 - 4.2 GHz, now it will be 4.0 - 4.2 GHz.

Good ol' VideoCipher II+. The sunsetting years of C-band. ... I think I was the one who put up the money for a 'plus board' when I was a teenager because I was a huge TV junkie. I eventually moved out of the house and when I went back home to visit in 1998, my Old Man informed me that the board died. I remember thinking: "My board!"

I remember when Telstar 401 went down. The only two VideoCipher services on the bird were adult services. I was at CES that weekend. I told one of the booth demonstrators what happened to the bird and he looked genuinely concerned. He said: "What about the VideoCipher services?" Lol.

Mor Galleria sucked. I loved the music videos on the channel, but the last year it swapped over to pretty much half hour shows selling something. Note that the channel went defunct the same month this video aired

@@mattcintosh2 I don't remember seeing anything on there other than clips of music videos on there which made me think it sucked even before it went under. But of course the QVC for music phase was better than this. It always seemed like kind of a waste of a transponder to me on the satellite where my grandparents had their dish parked most of the time.

@fiftyfuckingfeet They played full music videos until about the last year. Thats when the sucking started. Then it was like half hour informercial based on a CD or video set for a specific artist.
