ABSOLUTE BLOCK OR PERMISSIVE BLOCK ??? If "Subsiduary" signals are provided at a Station to allow various shunting or "Calling on" procedures, then the "Absolute Block" method, is replaced by what is known as "Permissive Block" Within Station limits. Which can allow the fundamental "Absolute Block" rule of ONE train per running line in the whole area covered by a Signalbox to be modified. A subsiduary "Calling On" signal allows a second train to enter an already occupied platform, so breaks the fundamental "Absolute Block" rule. Hence "Permissive Block" rules now apply. The condition for more than one train in a platform is that Passenger & Freight are NOT allowed to be mixed. Only Light Engines" may enter an occupied platform, or a second passenger train. A freight train held in a platform, can be joined by a second freight or a light loco". So the fundamental rule here is to keep passenger and freight apart. Ringed arms incidentally, like shunting signals CANNOT be accepted by loaded passenger trains as an authority to move. Ringed arms give access to NON passenger lines or yards.

Yep, that's my understanding too. Crook Street operates under the permissive block. To that end I've added a tiny rod to the recieving block instrument in the signal box to represent the plunger that allowed the signalman to accept (and provide line clear for) up to 10 trains into his station yard.

Everything about the North Western had such character: locomotives, carriages, wagons, signal box, everything, and you have captured it beautifully. The station is reminiscent of the arrival side at Euston. My favourite locomotive is the Special 0-6-0T. I wonder what the crew thought. They were tough men in those days.

Thanks a lot. I'd read somewhere that when cabs were first introduced, they were resisted by enginemen who regarded it as a matter of pride to withstand the elements - might have been ok at 30mph, not so much at 50 or 60!

@lnwrcrookstreet9954 When Kirtley introduced spectacle plates with a top slightly bent back to give a bit more protection, a deputation of enginemen came to see him to ask for the old design back because the North Western men were calling them sissies. Of course the only other methods of transport were horses and shank's pony, neither of which had cabs.

Interesting "Monks Ferry Steam Coal" wagons. I assume the "tubs" were designed to be hoisted direct. Almost a first containerisation. A quick Google "The boxes were lifted off wagons by the hooks with the door chains taut, and brought over a ship’s bunker. The door chains were then released, emptying the coal into the bunker beneath. Some nine companies are known to have used such wagons around the time of the Great War. With the change in ship’s fuel from coal to oil these wagons gradually became surplus to requirements. Some were converted or broken up. However it is known that many survived and joined the National Coal Board fleet, running into the 1950s.". Every day is a learning day.

they were for loading coal into steam ships in Birkenhead, its odd that they would be at Crook Street, they only worked between Monks Ferry wharf in Birkenhead and the collieries in Chester/Wrexham area

@lnwrcrookstreet9954 Ha ha! I fully understand. Just a thought though.... Well, maybe rather than a full, well-produced and edited video, like your normal ones, how about using your phone and take a quick (less than 60 seconds) Portrait orientation walk through clip, and post it as a KZbin "Short" instead? Requires no editing, or maybe just a little trim off either end at the most? Done and dusted in under 5 minutes. Also shorts might increase your audience as it is a different demographic that watch KZbin shorts.

Just a couple of questions regarding wagons seen on the layout... Please do not take them as being critical of your fantastic layout. (1) The use of Private Owner wagons to deliver coal to an LNWR steam shed. I have always been led to believe that this did not happen and that this was always carried out using railway owned stock - or is this a misconception on my part? (2) I thought that this was a pre-grouping layout yet I noticed an open wagon lettered N E in large letters, which I thought was a style not introduced until after grouping and the formation of the LNER - all pictures of North Eastern Railway goods wagons that I have seen being labeled N.E.R. in small letters. Sorry to be a pain - I am not a rivet-counter, just curious as I use your videos as a source for the lettering of some of the rolling stock on my own OO scale pre-grouping LNWR/GWR/MR layout.

Thanks Ken, no problem with the questions. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure about PO wagons supplying coal in their own wagons. I know Plodder Lane shed was supplied by Manchester Collieries in the '40s so 'I reckon...!' The NE came from the kit instructions, apparently the change occured pre-WW1 but as usual these things happened very gradually. ATB

I was wondering whether you would ever consider a ‘layout tour’ and outline of the construction methods, DCC. System that you use and the kind of room/shop where this wonderful model railroad is housed? I only ask as I too model in British O Scale for my own model railroad and am truly in awe of ‘Crook Street’. Those, I think you call them, ‘Stroudley’ cars/coaches, are so characterful. Thank you kindly for taking the time and trouble to record, post and edit such wonderful content, it really is appreciated.

@@tompetty1880Hi Tom, yes I've thought about doing 'how to' type videos, it's the usual problem of lack of time but it's definitely on the radar. A little info on the peculiarities of British railway practice, pre-1923 the railways were a multitude of private companies. Post-1923 they were grouped into 'the big four' LNER, LMS, GWR & SR. Crook Street is set in 1920 and the coaches are LNWR designs. William Stroudly was the chief mechanical engineer for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, so their coaches would be designed by him. Apologies if you already know this but for someone on the big side of the pond, our little island's railways could be fiendishly complicated. ATB.
