Better have a job dedicated to keeping this one running, in today's industry having a mechanic that's wanting to even touch it is another problem.

Love this bike, and I'd have one in a heartbeat. However the crap at the start talking about airplane intakes....those "intakes" on the original V-Max were affectations which were blanked off and fed zero air to the carbs. The kick was given by the second choke butterfly opening at a certain rpm allowing a much larger charge to enter the engine.

Bought my 2002 new and it has over 44k miles on it now. I didn’t care much for the way it looked until one pulled up next to me at a traffic light and I heard the engine idle. I was an amateur drag racer back in the day, small block Chevy Monza Spyder that had a few engine mods (carb, intake manifold, MSD ignition, exhaust, etc.) and I fell in love with the sound of the V-Max that day. Today I replaced the battery (3rd one) and spent ten minutes just standing behind it listening to the engine. Never crashed it myself but a deer knocked me off it ten years ago and I insisted they fix my V-Max instead of replacing it. Long live The Beast!

I still have my 1985 v-max They had trouble with the 2nd gear (Was changed) The seat was uncomfortable. I changed the seat for a 2007 v-max No problem after wards It's too bad that they didn't have a gas gauge. Cheers from Montreal Canada

Oh man.

Put a lot of miles on a Gen 1 Vmax, super quick & very fast once fully opened up. Factory they come at 120 BHP at the wheel, after the Dyno 155 BHP, with full acceleration to max gearing. Gen 1 was dangerous in the wrong hands. You had to plan your ride by the second, between the bikes power, weight, suspension & brakes, yet rewarding to ride. It was an old design barring the powerplant. Brakes were scary for a naked bike that could pass 150 MPH. Gen 1 Vmax was very much more engine than bike... A guy was always hammering about letting me give him a shot, always had a bad feeling about it. Eventually someone else gave him have a go, he wrapped that Vmax round a lamp post, didn't end well for the owner or the rider. Gen 1 you really need to respect the bike. Gen 2 is more forgiving, equally doesn't suffer fools... Gen 2 Vmax was a revelation, handled so much better and far safer, for the rider with a potential for a controllable 200 BHP at the wheel with an ECU mod & open pipes. Vmax's one crime is it's very limited tank range at just 4 gallons & thirsty consumption. If you have an opened up 1200 or 1700 be lucky to see 100 miles with sprinted riding... Was a sad day, but I needed a bike that could travel across EU at speed with not needing to stop stop at every second gas station.

To fully understand the power of this bike and the impact it had on the market, you have to go back and ride one to see how insane it was compared to everything out there at the time. It’s a pure beast, and always will be.
@echohunter4199 Жыл бұрын
Back in 89 one of the men I served with on Ft. Campbell, KY had an 86 V-Max 1200 and I had an 88 Suzuki GSX-R750J so when I saw what his bike could do it was insane! My Suzuki was my second road bike but I stayed within my comfort zone but I’m confident at my ability level and he was in his. The MP’s on the base hated him, he dusted one one day which pissed them off but, I see why he did it, I had to write the counseling statement for him doing 60 in a 35 zone, lol. But we both laughed since we know he was going A LOT faster. He framed the ticket he got from the MPs and hung it on the wall in his room. Back then a lot of young riders got into trouble with the V-Max since they didn’t expect slight differences that can sneak up on you. So if you ever find an older one in good shape and at a good price, please snatch it up and restore/preserve her. The other option is to contact any local street bike club or a specific V-Max group as to where the bike is and who to contact. If you have any info on vintage Military Vehicles, there’s groups of people that bring them back to life and they’re actually very affordable if you ever want to buy one, don’t go by ebay prices to look into it, go to Steelsoldiers.com and G503.com. There’s ads on there for parts, restored vehicles and projects, it’s like an inside group pricing structure and we help each other out and horse trade to help with parts.

Greetings from Scotland. Got a 95 V Max a few months ago, absolutely love it so far, it's a low mileage Japanese import so really nice condition, completely stock except for the drill mod to the stock exhaust cans. Sadly the V Boost was not functioning when i got the bike but have a new (used) controller and servo motor to fit so hopefully that will fix it.

And yet history shows the first and second generations weren't even the fastest. And they are like a Harley, heavy and under powered. Give us a 3rd generation with 350+ hp and weight under 500lbs.

Best bike? Hardly, peddled my ‘85 since new for 20yrs, it had power (Stage7 kit & Kerker full race system=160hp), but little control; 600lbs, worthless suspension, terrible brakes, occasional high speed warbles, consumed batteries, messy oil changes, obnoxious looks. My ‘05 Triumph Speed Triple is a far better bike is every category; weight, braking, suspension, handling, etc. Still riding it daily with 80K on it. I’ll never own another Jap bike again😎.

i was a teen then but i don't remember seeing the commercial. i used to ride my bmx bicycle across town to sit on the new motorcycles at a row of dealerships on one street. i think is was late 1986 when i walked into the yahama store and finally saw my first vmax, sitting in the middle of the show room floor, propped up perfectly on its center stand. it was a glorious sight. i will never forget it. it literally took my breath away. i started riding my bike across town multiple times a week just to look at the vmax. i don't think i even asked to sit on it. i was too in awe. a year later i managed to talk the owner of a business i worked for into cosigning a loan to buy a vmax from an airline pilot who only rode it a few times. he said he was terrified of it. i was still a teen then. can you imagine? i spent the next few years working to pay off speeding tickets, but thankfully i survived. my guardian angel put in some serious overtime that's for sure

Ha, nice. I went to a dealer to buy a used Kawa Z1000. He had a 10 year old Vmax too. I fell in love with its design and asked for a test ride. Dealer said "No way". Slept one more night and bought the Max untested. Never regretted it. :-)

i think the VMax 1700 (11 yrs in production) can be considered a failure compared to its wildly popular predecessor the VMax 1200 (22 yrs in production) and imo this is chiefly due to the bizarre styling which seemed an ugly caricature, almost parody, of the original's brutal but clean lines. the original was a muscular but stately design. you'd be just as home riding it with a suit and tie as a leather jacket. the new design looks like something out of a bad manga cartoon. the front half is not too bad save for the ugly headlight, but the rear half looks like it was made by that kid in your elementary class who could not draw to save his life. i was an owner of two 1200's and when i heard the 1700 was coming out i was THRILLED and could not wait to buy one when able. but then the design was reveled and... i nearly threw up. i was physically ill. i could not believe how far the designers had missed the mark. to this day i still don't want one, but would consider buying a 1200 again. it was such a handsome design from almost every angle. the 1700 imo is ugly from almost every angle. i know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the comparatively short production run seems to agree with me

The 1200 was designed by GK Design. Iconic. The 1700 by Yamaha. Unfortunately.
