What exactly are the fundamental differences between polyphony and counterpoint?
@dlmusicteacher
@dlmusicteacher 4 ай бұрын
Polyphony covers a wide range of music with multi melodies. And it’s more general and free flowing. Counterpoint is a more structured approach to creating polyphonic music with specific rules and techniques. Imagine two people having a conversation. Polyphony is like both people speaking at the same time, regardless of how they interact. So, it is open to a more chaotic sound at times. Counterpoint is like having a well-structured conversation where both people take turns speaking, listen to each other, and avoid interrupting.

@dlmusicteacher
@dlmusicteacher 4 ай бұрын
How long have you been singing for to find it? Singing is a process for sure. Ultimately, finding a voice instructor is going to be the best and fastest option as it’s our jobs to help you find you, find your voice. If not, I would recommend you buy an online course - Cheryl Porter has a great one, Ken Tamplin has a great one, and if you can’t do that you will need to look up KZbin videos on the following: chest voice exercises, mixed voice exercises and head voice exercises. What kind of music are you trying to sing? Rock? R and B?

@dlmusicteacher
@dlmusicteacher 5 ай бұрын
You just have to know your own register, if you are an lower voice there are certain notes you won’t be able to hit that are high and have to move the key down, however, you should always try for a few higher notes than you can hit to start with good instruction and techniques.

@@dlmusicteacher one more doubt, does singing higher note frequently damage my voice? If it does, then how do I know when to stop? I do feel pain after singing high for too long. Most importantly, Falsetto is also very close to The Weeknd’s natural voice which is why is he able to pull it off so effortlessly over multiple songs and over prolonged periods of time. I have heard from people who have met up and talked to him in real life for a sustained people who attest to his natural voice being close, so one can say his natural voice is “built” for the Falsetto. Many can do the Falsetto but very few can sing with a Falsetto without requiring tremendous effort and most people’s voice will tire out after a couple of 1-2 minutes
@dlmusicteacher

True but remember falsetto is a matter of the vocal chords coming together strongly or not, it is not always related to a vocie being high or not. That being said I hear you as your point is valid.

@reddillon8425
@reddillon8425 8 ай бұрын
He’s not singing in falsetto until he’s doing his very obvious flips for artistic effect The average man mostly has to use falsetto to sing like the weeknd for sure though The weeknd is a high tenor, you can tell even when he’s speaking that his voice is very light and high, even when speaking on lower pitches. A lot of people convince themselves that “oh he’s putting that voice on on purpose! He doesn’t sound like that!” And as a high tenor myself, trust me when I tell you, nobody would ever do that. We want to sound like YOU GUYS when we speak lmao nobody would fake that. I speak as deep and as thickened as I can make my voice and I STILL sound like a teenager at 28. And remember vocal types are descriptors of TONE not of RANGE, ESPECIALLY because of microphones. I can hit F2, that does NOT make me a baritone, I fucking WISH i were a baritone especially when speaking but I will never be. Those f2s do not have the fullness of tone, the power, the volume or the texture that a baritone or bass’ f2s have, and that’s just something I have to live with. I know a lot of people talk about wanting to be tenors but to be honest it’s very possible to LIGHTEN UP a HEAVY tone and damn near impossible to make a light voice heavier. The benefit of being a high tenor though is that there’s less tonal separation between chest voice and head voice, meaning it’s a bit easier to keep tonal consistency than it would be for, say, a bass up in that range. Also I want to make this painfully clear because singers and singing teachers are ALL over the place on this and it made me confused as all hell when I was first learning. HEAD VOICE and FALSETTO are NOT the same thing, if it EVER sounds like you are in FALSETTO (even if it’s not breathy, even if it’s loud, even if it’s powerful, if it’s that flutey sort of tone that is FALSETTO regardless of what ANYBODY tries to tell you) you are NOT in mix/head voice. The way people describe it it’s like they’re saying you’re supposed to be singing in chest for low-mid notes and flipping into some kind of altered falsetto for high notes, that is NOT what mix voice is and probably not what you’re aiming for when trying to sing higher (although it’s a very cool sound in and of itself, nothing wrong with it) When you’re in mix it will mostly FEEL like you’re singing in your speaking voice, it’s not gonna feel like the difference between going from chest to falsetto AT ALL, and to be honest when you do it for a while you’re gonna have trouble even telling when you’re mixing at all. Now you absolutely can take your falsetto and darken it and it can kind of sound like your speaking voice and it can absolutely be utilized musically but if you’re the average person who wants to sing higher that is not gonna be the sound you’re aiming for. The way people always described mix had me flipping into falsetto and trying to darken that sound enough to have it sound like my chest voice, and that is NOT what any of my favorite singers are doing and it does NOT sound like that. The real mix is very much the idea of lightening up the chest voice as you go higher and lessening the airflow (very important, try to imagine you’re breathing in air when you’re vocalizing a high note rather than breathing out air) and do not get frustrated because unlocking mix can take a while and it’s very much muscles that need to be trained, meaning even if you KNOW how to activate these muscles perfectly, when you first start out they’re probably not going to be strong enough to do what they need to do, so PRACTICE PRACTICE NEVER STOP PRACTICING.
