I'll stick to burying them and piling up soil as they grow. And just a couple of PIECES of potato, with eyes in them, in each planting spot. And planting spots MUCH further apart. It's just so wasteful to plant whole potatoes, and put them so close together. Interesting experiment though.

I did this two years ago and then this summer the chooks got into them and dug them up. Time to buy some more plants!

It beats digging potatoes. Could a small layer of dirt before the mulch could have helped any?

I didn't like ginger until I grew it. Added to stuff it's good. But thinly sliced and pickled sweet I can wipe it out. It's like candy to me.

You’re on the list of those that will be targeted by “government” because they don’t want self sufficient people. New “laws” are on their way to ban people growing their own food. Watch this space.

All I can say is I learned the hard way that there’s potatoes worth “hilling” and others that it won’t make any difference.. 😅 Make sure you’re planting an Indeterminate variety if you want to put the effort into ‘hilling’ … because you can hill a determinate variety for 3 extra feet and get ZERO extra potatoes.. 🙄 I know.. ..& most of my store bought volunteer potatoes are determinate.. I get a good return on what goes into the pots vs what comes out.. but I’ve switched to specific seed potatoes of the indeterminate varieties to hill, the volunteers and last seasons leftovers, just go into a decent sized pot and they happily make me several more than I planted 😬😬 ALSO!! If you’re partial to the tiny potatoes they sell in bags for roasting, if they sprout, you can “hill” them in a window box.. so they only end up in about 8inches of soil.. but.. they’ll FILL the window box with biddy little wonderful spuds🥰 I’ve grown them like that 3 years straight.. Apartment dwellers need to be creative with space constraints.. 😅 But I’m planting this years into additional window boxes this weekend 😬 Potatoes are the most fun thing to grow 😂 it’s always a surprise and you’ve waited months for it.. awesome! The biddy ones were wasted on a larger pot, the determinate factor is scaled to size apparently 🤷‍♀️🤪lol

I don't fertilize. I added organic material to the SWFL sand over the years. I planted a passion fruit vine behind the spineless prickly pear cactus (for nopales)in the ground next to my front porch. A bad spot, lots of afternoon sun, plants roast. The cactus gave a little shade and was a 1st trellis. Then it grew up to the pigeon pea tree and then up to a trellis around and over my front door. Now i have a living sun shade and a wind break and a privacy screen all in one that gives me fruits. I could just reach up and pick them, but mostly I'll hear a little thud and know there's another one. Most days it's like hunting for Easter eggs. Just look around in the planters or on the ground near the steps and you'll find one. The vines help me to maximize my limited space by going vertical. They are happy. And so am I.

Way back in the 70s in Mobile Alabama I watched 3 to 6 feet around me. Many thought I was a depressed kid. I was looking... seeking out snakes, lizards and frogs. Yep a bug freak. In 50 years in snake country have never had a serious encounter with them. Guess there's 20 or more in the yard right now.

No no no !!! You can’t do that and expect good heals. To tell you the truth I am surprised you got anything good. There is a reason you plant potatoes deep and then as they grow up about 8 inches you heap the soil to cover more and then that gives more room for more potatoes. It’s important to heap if you want a good yeald. 👍

For any apartment dwellers/container growers.. I rigged up something similar for my cukes on the patio food forest 😁.. if you plant cukes in a milk crate, you can use zip ties to hold 6-8ft stakes at an angle and put mesh or twine between them.. then cukes don’t HAVE to go up, they just go over.. depending on the variety, I’ve also used stakes in all 4 corners of the milk crate and twine around and between, and the better climbing types were perfectly fine without much assistance.. and grew like champs 😬.. made some honking big cukes 👍 lol I have a dedicated crate at this point, so I don’t have to keep attaching or removing the zip tied stakes.. works great for four years straight now.. It depends on what ability to “sprawl” you have.. in the small ‘urban’ spaces, vertical use is necessary, so anything that leans too far can eat up precious real estate.. but it’s entirely doable along the edge or if it’s elevated enough to walk under.. Ive managed to get the beans trellised high enough to walk underneath.. but they climb better 😅 lol

Allegedly, those bumps mean that the potatoes didn't get enough water. So I think if they had some more water, and maybe mix a little compost with the mulch to give them nutrients as they grow upwards I think the yeild might have been better. I plan on doing this method. Even if it doesn't get the most potatoes, I think it's a fair trade off from not having to work as hard. When you're disabled like me, every energy saving measure is worth it.
