Oh, like most U.S. citizens, I did not realize that there is a 3rd status. Not a U.S. Citizen, but a U.S. National. For me, if the U.S. is going to hang on to those lands, claiming them as U.S. territory, we need to change the law making them full citizens, no more "inbetweens". If not, then we need to let them form their own country, and get a treaty establishing leases for our military bases. One or the other.

It does seem strange that American Samoans can live in the United States, get a job, pays State and Federal Taxes, like any other person, but can't vote? Isn't that taxation without representation which American colonists fought for the Revolutionary war to have representation? Why are they designated as American National working in the United States? It's pretty much the same as Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, they are still possessions of the United States that keeps their native lands as territory. Hawaii was its own nation, ruled by a monarchy, until non-native businessmen & merchants revolted against the reigning Queen, and with aid from an American naval vessel's crop of armed personnel took control of the capital, imprisoning the Queen in her own palace. The territory of Hawaii was governed by a Govenor for decades until it became a state in 1959.
