A friend of my former teacher who was a musician in an orchestra years ago was rehearsing in a hall after Kissin and they could hear him outside for ages passages over and over AND OVER again very slowly until they were perfect. They had to almost coax Evgeny to leave the piano so the orchestra could rehearse. When he came back to rehearse again afterwards, he continued to do the same thing again for hours. Yunchan Lim was practicing up to 20 hours a day in the lead up to the Cliburn Competition which he won. His foster family he was staying with during the competition said Lim's focus was insane. He was playing slowly and meticulously, recording small passages on his phone, hearing them back, making adjustments, sending recordings to his teacher on the other side of the world at 4am for feedback, without stopping even to eat or drink sometimes for hours and hours. Richter according to his wife spent 10 hours a day practicing. Rachmaninoff spent 12-15 hours a day practicing before he appeared as a soloist. This is how the greats get to the level that they do.

IMHO, everyone needs to watch Yunchan Lim's take on this etude from the Cliburn competition (which he won). It is mesmerizing and, to me, the best version on KZbin - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5fOZoatmZ2Kfs0&ab_channel=TheCliburn. Berezovsky has great technique but is missing the dynamic variations of the piece.

I prefer this performance from Idil Biret - for me that is the ultimate reference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWWvkoClqrl2nqs But this rendition here is also superbly beautiful

En este video se puede observar como el e jecutor mueve dedos y muñecas, vibran... pero no se ve que es el n° 12, primero hay otros 11 trascendentes... trifonov acaba los 12 empapado. Liszt implacable

1:26 this transition to the "piano" session is superb, then going for the crescendo 1:40 insane dynamic control... 2:13 note the voice on left hand again in 2:19 and 2:25

Just peak human performance, finishing THIS set with this much fierce is super human.
“I live with him. In my soul. All the time. And that’s it.” I’m a Baroque cellist who has focused on Vivaldi cello concertos. Valentina’s statement is extraordinarily powerful. So simple, yet gorgeously solemn
beautiful interpreptation of the piece wonderful i love how soft he plays it makes a lot more relaxing of a tone to this piece

The hardest part is not the powerful chords in the beginning and in the end, but the middle section. To play it expressively and flawlessly is almost impossible!

Had to learn this. A good Brahms composition. Short Masterpiece. Big piano style for moves all over keyboard, interesting chords, modulations, dissonances. A middle lullaby section. For me as amateur, a break from the Scriabin & Rachmaninov & little bit of Chopin I can handle. Van Cliburn version was the first I appreciated.
