I'm in my late 30s and raised in the area and worked in st. Marys. It always felt culty despite the most of the area facing some sort of Bible belt toxicity.

Gary makes a really good point about Regular Catholics Who Attend the Old Latin Mass (Moderate Trads) being ostracised by a bigger/more dominant Extreme Trad. group because they have a different way of thinking. I've seen this for over 40 years attending the Old Latin Mass, including with the SSPX. Maybe having a bigger focus on (especially long-term) Moderate Trads would be useful because they're much quieter so much less is known about them than the Extreme Trad. group.

Wow, Laura and Gary, this was so good! This helped my trad recovery path, as I am still processing and detangling. Laura, I love you and I am truly so grateful for you and the Trad Recovery team. Deo gratias 😉. Edit: When I started discerning out of tradism I started referring to my trad priests to my close friends as, “sacramental dispensers.” It made me me feel sad, and I’d take that to confession but the more I would look around and discern the more I saw them only as that. So, when Gary used “sacrament machine” that resonated with me and it helped me understand what I was under.

With all due respect this is heresy. Her parents “didn’t like” the changes in our Catholic Church??? Henry the Eighth “didn’t like “ that he couldn’t divorce Catherine of Aragon… so he broke off from Rome and stated his own religion!!! How is this schism any different??? The whole basis for our Catholic faith is the Magisterium from Jesus to Peter and down through the ages. These are lost souls who need our prayers because they “didn’t like” the changes. By the way Sister, purgatory is still very much a part of our dogma.

I'm from Germany, but don't really have that doomy atmosphere experience from the SSPX. Now, I've often enough ranted about their theology because my Catholic faith (converted in 2020) always rested on fidelity to Peter, and I love Church history and apologetics/theology in general, which also helps refuting the SSPX (except they don't care about it), but I've also, especially in 2022, have had some very nice experiences from there. Perhaps because I've never been fully "immersed/infected" in/by traditionalism, I didn't have as many (still enough to make me very angry) negative experiences? But as faulty as their theology is, I always found them to be generally quite nice people (except in theology matters). I don't know if that's interesting enough for an interview?

It would be interesting if, through Father Campbell, a kind of advice and support could be provided in the recovery of traditionalism focused on priests.

Everybody talks about clown Masses from the 1970's and 80's. As a lifelong Catholic I have never heard of where they were or who was doing them.

Interesting conversation. Also, I feel bad and feel his heartache when he says that there is no soul to it and that his experience felt like he was just a sacrament machine. I’ve often wondered this about more traditional groups, especially those outside of the church. I know one group that still does this and has very young kids at about 16 or 17 studying for the priesthood and well that’s not a bad thing in and of itself I wonder what their formation is like and I wonder if they’re really being prepared. Heck, our own regular seminary have these problems already I can only imagine that there are lots of the same problems, but of course, because they do everything according to tradition I’m sure many traditional list types will argue. Their seminaries are just inherently betterand not deal with such problems.

Thank you, this interview was very important for me to hear! I know can better see what my liberal friends are afraid of when they see the 'answers' as limiting. They are afraid of boxing in of God. But the answers are only bad if we treat them in a soulless and loveless way imo. If we first love God and neighbour, and then look up answers, it helps us build up a much clearer view of God. It is good that this umderstanding helps me to see my liberal friends in a much more charitable way! Also, my son asked me if God has humour. I paused the interview and told the story of Theresa of Avila. I resumed the podcast and you talked about that story... I love His 'coincidences'l😁

Great to see and hear Gary here. We were fellow seminarians in Australia in the late 1980s and he was one of the SSPX priests I knew here in New Zealand before he jumped ship from the SSPX. We were never told the actual reasons, unsurprisingly perhaps. He didn’t mention the wild pre-Goulburn seminary beginnings in Nanango, Queensland, where the ‘seminary’ started off in a motel! There’s definitely a book in there; I hope he writes it. Best wishes Gary.

So many people escape the depths to salvation in the Church Jesus founded. But then the Satan places shiny coins at the bottom of the sea and the naive jump ship only to be in danger of drowning again. "I couldn't understand it" is the coin of pride. It worked against Lucifer himself and against Eve and Adam. It didn't work against Mary or Jesus, who covered themselves in obedient humility at all costs. These churches in schism, whether calling themselves orthodox, protestant, traditional or other all have the same temptation. Pride. Peter sins and humbly seeks forgiveness. So does Paul who gives Peter the title Rock, Cephas, throughout his letters, setting the model. Criticize the Rock but don't fall to the temptation of Pride and schism.

Is he reconcile back to Rome? He can still be a priest in FSSP or ICKSP.

I felt that this only scratched the surface and hope Gary does more interviews with you. I just read the recent article you posted on Trad Recovery and shed a few tears. Would love to hear Gary go into further detail about the SSPX 1 week St Ignatius retreats. Was at one of those retreats and felt something was off when recordings was played at meal times on the crisis in the church.

Such a great point that Gary made about how the SSPX defends points of the faith but does not explain, teach, or share them. If you feel like persecution is being leveled at you from every side, you’re in a constant state of defense, and it’s too dangerous to venture out with what you have.

I don’t know much about the SSPX, and I understand Mass is no time to socialize, but there should be some sort of connection among the parishioners. One example of the need for touch is when the priest touches our foreheads and makes the sign of the cross with ashes.

Re: "I can't think of a saint who detracted their father..." the first one who leapt to mind was St. Dymphna, whose father was also her king, who obviously told people about her father's abuses and mental instability as they helped her flee and hid her. Calling out abusers and warning others with truth is not detraction.

I have noticed that Trads especially the woman obsess severely on the Virgin martyrs like St Philomena. And they force their daughters to grow a deep connection to these saints. I personally love St Philomena but I believe they need to also give credit to the other female saints like St Mary Magdalena or St Mary of Egypt.
