What is this lacing braid called? Its divine 😍

@TheAngryMushroom 17 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! The lacing is a double loop. I generally use it on most everything rather than polishing the leather edges because I tend to use a variety of different leathers. Using such a variety means each leather has its own quirks for finishing. By lacing all the edges, this method is more predictable as to the time it will take and looks fancier for longer.

I think all the negative reviews probably come from 3 types of reviewers. #1...and I really, reeeeally dislike this growing corner of the guitar world. They review a guitar with the notion of if it's acoustic and not a Martin, it's below them and if it's electric and not a '59 Les Paul or a '61 Strat then get off my lawn. Ugh 🙄 #2: they've seen the informercial and assume it's crap and go the comedic angle #3: they do review as is out of box, sitting for 15 years, without doing a setup Once you get past that scam-ish off putting nature of the infomercial, stop trying to compare it to what they were telling you to compare it to, it a fine little guitar. It's playable.

I haven’t had fading or bleeding with properly sealed water stain as I have seen happen on alcohol based dyes. It all comes down to the method of application and finish. No method is particularly easy or foolproof except for dip dying. It’s super easy.

These replacements from Stewmac could work www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/solid-peghead-guitar-tuning-machines/economy-covered-gear-6-in-line-tuners/ be sure to measure the headstock holes for fitting. Stewmac is good with returns too. I usually try to find tuners that aren’t too expensive unless it’s an actual vintage guitar and you need to keep original. My shop is full of fixer upper guitar projects so these Stewmac strat style tuners work great. I also like Gotoh tuners a lot But the single mounting screw requires filling old holes. www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/solid-peghead-guitar-tuning-machines/gotoh-schaller-style-knob-6-in-line-tuners/ that’s my take on tuners for a Hondo electric. I want very much to add a couple of thoughts that will also help the performance of this line of Harmony guitars. I bought my H-167 new in 1969 along with a Rocket. Though I have own a number of guitar over the years these are by far, my treasures. So here goes. This was a excellent video. The man with the file is an artist, and should come with a label,Don't try this at home boys and girls I am by training a Gunsmith. The big tools of my trade are a screwdriver and a file. This guy is a pro, and I enjoy his skill. To do this job you do need the right tools and the skill to go with them. I maintain my own guitars but I am no guitar text. When it comes to the neck or frets or nut or brigade I want this guy working on them. watching him I would turn my treasures over to him to work on. I also found on both of these guitars, tune them down one step to Standard D . Brings out more of the bass. Also by tuning down your neck is under less stress, your fingers get a break and this tuning works good for country and folk. All the chord shapes stay the same. I like it try it. And keep these old Harmonies playing they are great guitars.

Thanks for the kind words. I think we could build a guitar with a screwdriver and a file. May need to have a Swiss Army Knife handy just in case. Fret work is scary at first. As a Gunsmith, you might enjoy this guitar I built during my Steampunk phase. Pirate flintlock Strat instagram.com/p/ur-8nfGc5u/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== I've done a few fret leveling jobs before taking on this Harmony project. Watched lots of Stewmac videos on fret repair and practiced on some real junk guitars and mandolins. Good tip on tuning down for a warmer bass tone and easy on the neck. I dig these old Harmony and Stella guitars too. Thanks for watching and keep on rocking.

@@TheAngryMushroom I love that guitar. It's great. And I find Steampunk really creative. The way you learn how to do fret is the way you learn, there is no other way. You may ruin something once in a while but that the cost of education. You should never use a file on brass or nickel silver that you have used on steel. The finger nail section of your local drug store has some of the best sanding and polishing boards The polish you can use as a glue. Anyways great guitar. I'm glad you feel my comment added,I wanted it to.

Great helpful video... So I want to ask -- What's the big deal about knocking down the top surface of the bridge nut (filing and sanding it down)( AFTER you're satisfied with your new cuts? You''re done with your cuts ... You're at or near 16 thousandths on your 1st E string first fret, it feels and plays okay, and it sounds good ... why the extra filing and sanding?... And does this answer my own question ?.... (hahahaha) ... I now have that awful sitar sound resonating from my 1st E sting when fully tuned and played open. Fretting at first, or any fret, and no sitar sound. Knocked down to Open G, playing something sweet, or bashing away the Clash's version of I Fought The Law, no sitar, no Ravi Shankar. It's only when back to standard tuning and true E and played open that I have that sitar sound. Is that a symptom of.... what?.... string not articulating ONLY off the fretboard side of the nut?...more than one articulation point?... i have a replacement set of saddle and nut on the way, just in case I buggered up this nut (which I don't think I have, at least not yet... I still have more to file down. I'm at about 20 thou for the 1st high E off first fret).
@TheAngryMushroom
@TheAngryMushroom Жыл бұрын
thanks for the question. I read in Dan Erliwine’s book on guitar repair. The StewMac guy. He wrote that after getting the nut depth to where you want, level out the top of the nut so the strings aren’t sitting in a deep canyon. You want about half of the string showing in above the groove. Might help with twangy sound.

@@TheAngryMushroom Thanks for the response . Your vid here and also Randy Schartiger's w/ a entry-level Savannah are most useful w/ regard to measurements. I cured my issue. Not certain which caused it. The replacement bone saddle I installed which I assumed was 74 mm as specified in the adv was in fact somewhat shorter... about 71 .5 or so... and had slipped fully toward the treble side. Fixed/shimmed that with slices of wooden matchsticks at both ends, now it won't move. Also refined the cut of the nut for the treble E making sure to maintain the angle of the headstock so there is now only one true articulation point. Now Ravi Shankar sitar has left the building. I was 9 years w/o owning a guitar or even picking one up. 7 weeks ago again realized the urge to play. Rescued in a 'hardship' sale a entry-level Alvarez Regent Ac/ele from a father selling it for his son who had some challenges. Got replacement bone nut and saddle (2 sets) for it. Then also rescued a entry-level Rogue (intended now to be my dedicated Nashville-strung piece) from a woman who had two nicer pricier guitars which she wasn't playing, someone had given her the Rogue saying "here, this is a beginners guitar, lighter strings, should be easier." She didn't play that one either. Stored w/ string tensions loosened, flat on its back, it developed a down-bow. And 3rd string had cut into the plastic saddle. So it was not playable and barely tunable. Replacement saddle and nut on that were perfect fits, easy-peasy. (ain't no 45 dollar guitar no mo). On the Alvarez, the original plastic nut was not as easy to get off, and the replacement nut is a bit too tall. I should have noticed it before I glued it in, but didn't, assumed that since things were easy and straight-forward on the Rogue that that would also be the case for the Alvie. Lesson learned. So now I'm forced to work on those nut slots. Thanks again.

BOTH were worth fixing up. I was doing a short recording of how the Rogue sounded Nashville-strung for the lady i bought if off, and something -- out of I-don't-know-where -- just poured out. My brain, my intellect, was not involved in a 'decision' to 'do' what flowed out. It just happened, without conscious thought. It just happened. On ... or FROM ... a 'beginners' guitar that I paid 45 bucks for that was not playable. No, not thinking now of any more 'rescues.' Or videos. You and others doing YOUR videos own the turf and are making the 'rescues' possible. But now... going all-in and spending 15 bucks for a set of bone (replacing plastic) bridge-pins for both of these!

I absolutely love these old “cheap” Ibanez acoustic guitars. They never play or sound bad to me! I also like the Yamahas from this era, and think that those could even be better, but these Ibanez are totally more comfortable to play! I have repaired an identical guitar that had started to crack near the glue joint just below the low and high E tuning machines. Luckily, it was a clean break with a lot of surface area, so it went right back together with wood glue! That guitar is owned by my school, and our band program is entirely student-run during lunchtime, so we get to repair our own stuff! It was sitting on a shelf clamped together over the summer. I still see that instrument every week in my school’s band room, and it holds a perfect tune, giving me hope that my repairs are strong! Also, in my city (Seattle,) there is a famous sculpture made mostly of guitars and basses, but there are at least 10 Ibanez PF5s up there! (Other instruments include Fender and Mitchell acoustics, Squier, Epiphone, and Mitchell electric guitars and basses, assorted unknown guitars, though I did find 2 genuine Fender Telecasters and a similar range Stratocaster among the sea of Squiers. No real Gibsons, but there was a random Cello up there that was probably just as expensive as a Gibson!)
