What is the camera doing then when you’re shooting mp4? Since I can choose NATURAL Leica Mode when I’m shooting mp4. Wouldn’t that be the same as shooting log and then eventually just applying the natural profile?

So, after nearly a year of use, I’m replacing the Z9 with the Z8. The Z9 is way too heavy and too big to take around with you for long periods. I love the Z9, and sad to see it go, but need to be pragmatic about how I use these tools.

Your reviews are always so welcome because you consider things objectively, and you have a lot of experience with other systems, so you understand the in which each camera system exists. I currently use the X2D, but ten years ago I had the S-E (S typ 006 runout when they sold the S 007). Going back, when I see those files, they are some of the best photos I ever took. And, like you, I loved that shutter. Since then though we have been spoiled by better EVFs, lighter weight systems overall, IBIS, liveview (esp. zoom for critical focus), etc, etc. The S3 is a much later generation camera, and addresses some of those issues. What will be interesting to see from Leica now (Jan 2025) is whether they offer an EVF body for the S lenses, or a whole new medium format mirrorless system (and adapter for S lenses), or, more likely, abandon the MF category. Let's see.

Working in TIFF will get you in the GP scale because you can use more than 8bit color and that is a factor of file size and image quality. I made some of the same tests with Sony cameras (61MP full frame sensor) and Canon TSE lenses (17mm, 24mm, 90mm and 135mm are all great to) but Sonys software falls short with the pixel shifting tools. So I think it could work better with Canon for me since I don't really shoot Fuji for now.

The Video saved me 5k in Euro which I was about to invest in a used Leica Monochrome? The Video also taught me that Fuji indeed tries to let look the noise like real grain of developed pictures. The noise by the Q2 color looked very disturbing … for my taste. You should make a second video and shoot in real life situations where you have a high spread between contrast and light. I guess that’s where the monochromes will shine…or shoot at blue hour…this would be interesting…

At 9:57, can’t wait for your video with Leica’s reply. Besides, please ask them why in the continuous shooting modes no content credentials are written to the images. Makes no sense. And tell them to add an option for disabling the useless error messages and warnings. I am also missing an airplane mode. The in body profiles such as STD, VIV, NAT, BWnat and BWhc are NOT added to the raw files. Same thing applies to the Leica Looks loaded into the body. All other brands deliver all of the body profiles to LrC and C1 except for Leica. That’s pretty bad because users can’t edit the raw files based on the beautiful Leica profiles. I started being a digital Leica user since the M10 and I am also complaining this since then. According the the replies I got from the Leica (1st level) support, I am afraid they even didn’t understand the problem nor forward it. That’s just bad.

As always very informative and useful. It also raises a few questions, for example how this function handles moving details like leaves in nature, and how it compares to Lightroom’s A.I.-driven Enhance Detail.

Yes indeed, moving subjects when the camera is on a tripod can be corrected to some extent by "movement correction" in the Multishot menu but the abilities of this feature are rather limited!

There is no such thing as lens compression, it is a myth. You can get the exact same FOV equivalence with teh 75 you just need to get closer. The only thing the biger focal lense does it gets you closer to subject, but nothing is compressed.
@mathphotographer10 күн бұрын
Sloppy language 😅 I talk about a „visual impression“ which you can use for your advantage to get a certain image impression. Here is what I think about lens compression: photographylife.com/what-is-lens-compression

Thank you very much for your commentary, information, and advice---excellent as usual! I have one question. Are you sure that with the "Save One Single Shot" turned OFF, you only get the multishot image and nothing else? I ask because my recollection from a few years ago with the previous camera, the SL2-S, was that the camera saved not only the multishot image, but also ALL of the individual 24mp images from which the multishot image was constructed. Thus, for the new camera (SL3-S) to allow just the simple choice between saving a multishot image plus a 24mp image or else saving only a multishot image would amount to a big change in the new camera (SL3-S). My alternative expectation for the new camera would have been that the choice afforded by the "Save One Single Shot" feature would be between saving (in addition to the multishot, of course) only one 24mp image or, on the other hand, saving all of the multiple 24mp images. Thanks again for all of your great postings!
@mathphotographer11 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot, Arthur. I actually tried it out for this video posting: I deactivated "save one single shot" and then checked the memory cards with my particular storage settings. I had only the multishot images on the cards and no single shot ... maybe its what my unit is doing and others have different outcomes, please let me know in the comments.
@arthurpeterson527310 күн бұрын
@@mathphotographer Thanks for responding. That seems like a worthwhile change from the SL2-S to the SL3-S. In addition to the multishot image, there is no real need to have all of the 24mp images as well. Saving only a single 24mp image (if desired) should suffice, I would think.
@lfoggyf936511 күн бұрын
The design of the lens hood is the problem here. Seems unnecessarily complicated to me. Does it need to be that square shape which fouls the filter? In any case, it would be very easy for Leica to make a threaded 'extender' that adds a few mm between the lens hood and the lens, thereby permitting a filter to be fitted. As I have a machine shop with all the necessary lathes etc, I may spend an afternoon making one. Another solution would be to find an inexpensive conventional round lens hood with a 60mm external thread to replace the Leica one.
@DonaldHawk11 күн бұрын
Sorry but I may not have caught it. If you can use electronic shutter only in multishot you may be able avoid the shutter slap causing some camera movement.
@mathphotographer11 күн бұрын
Correct, its not the shutter shake but my pointing finger messing with the shutter button so the movement is caused by me and not by the shutter.
@erick976211 күн бұрын
Hi Math, thanks for your advice. Does this Multishot function now also work with Leica TL APSC lenses? It seems to me that macro braketing is still not possible on the SL3/SL3-S? I'm thinking of going for a Nikon ZF, as I'm very interested in the manual focus assistance (subject/eye detection) on the Nikon ZF (possible with Leica M lenses). It's a pity that Leica doesn't offer a similar technique on the SL3 / SL3-S camera...
@mathphotographer11 күн бұрын
Thanks, I do not have APSC-lenses for the SL system so cannot comment, anyone else maybe? On macro, focus bracketing is still not a feature available on the SL-system which is a pity, fully agree.
