Is that a rebar triangle? Awesome! Love it, will be trying it myself soon
@johnarrucci11962 ай бұрын
Absolutely Rebar!!! On one of my trips to Brazil over the years, I went to a construction site and had some guy just make me a few sizes of triangles. That one that I play is my favorite. let me know how you do on making one.
@Gk2003m2 ай бұрын
@ it’s going to be the easiest thing in the world. I just did a grill project using rebar. Trying to bend rebar using heat breaks it, so you simply bend it cold. So I’ll pick up a length of it (the stuff is relatively inexpensive) and bend up a few different sizes of triangle.
@johnarrucci11962 ай бұрын
@@Gk2003m It looked easy when they did it. I'm sure that you'll have a blast experimenting with sizes. I've found the best results are from equilateral triangles, but don't forget the space between the bottom and left side.

John, your drum set transcriptions of these percussion ensemble rhythms are so appreciated. Thanks for all you do. Where can I find the aural sources that inspired you to transcribe them? Your efforts have encouraged me to take a listen and try one myself. Are these pop rhythms or old folk traditions?
@johnarrucci11962 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for your interest and questions. The rhythms that I have featured would all be classified as "traditional" within the ethnic groups. KZbin has an abundance of resources, both audio and video, where you can transcribe audio and in many cases, see the players playing the individual parts. I will be making available a collection of transcriptions of these rhythms shortly and you'll have plenty to practice. Glad that you are enjoying these!

Brazilian suggestion here: when the right hand is playing on the ride, try playing the third stroke on the bell. It will sound great :)
@johnarrucci11965 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and for your suggestion. That is another great sound. Because of emulating the triangle and for instructional purposes, I didn't want students to over- emphasize that last stroke or lose that gradual crescendo that is the result of releasing the muffle on the left hand on triangle. Thanks again!

A single drum can make a bunch of different sounds. Drums are far more versatile than what you get from a typical rock drummer, who uses two-ply damped heads and then proceeds to deaden them further.

@johnarrucci11965 ай бұрын
That "Missa Luba" session was fun. There are many recordings out there with various takes on the drum part. We used DonDon (Talking drums), Frikywa (Grello bells from Ghana), Shekere and other instruments that aren't indicated in the score and are not usually played.

William Burroughs, while brilliant in his own right, is but a faction here; he is reading a poem by Kerouac, and he is backed by music by tomandandy, which complements his delivery.

You had asked about Tom Hajdu and Andy Milburn. I was "first call" percussionist over at Tomandandy for some time and did many projects with them including commercials, films and some records. I first met Tom and Andy when they were students at Princeton University and I was teaching percussion there (1987-2010). Tom was my student for at least 1 semester. I liked them both very much. When I worked there, I saw and worked with Tom more than Andy, but always enjoyed seeing Andy. They are both very talented, the projects were interesting and they were very open to ideas. They had moved their operation out to L.A. some years ago and so I've kind of lost touch, but have good memories of my work with them.
