I might be a few years late, but I want to acknowledge the change in the lyrics in the last chorus. Beforehand, it was always “Puff the Magic Dragon, lived by the sea,” and the chorus was in the past tense. I love that in the final chorus, it becomes a present tense to represent that Puff will always be there. This is definitely something I’ll share with my students, thank you for posting this!

I play in assisted living facilities. It's fun and I leave them with a smile on their face. There was this woman who was my partner in crime. She always made these duck sounds so I started singing the songs that way +this is one of them.) Never the same song just randomly inserted it here and there and she would chime in. I noticed I hadn't seen her and asked a member of the staff about her. She said she wasn't allowed to say anything. That's how it is, one day you're here, the next you're gone. So I'm dedicating this to you Joanne, a feisty little firecracker full of life to the very end. ☘️

Prior to 2017, I added annotations to my videos on screen using KZbin’s own app. However, they then made annotations obsolete, and although they promised that existing ones would still be available, this was not the case. Consequently, I am now adding lyrics and chords with the information below the video when good people such as yourself point out the need for them. If you are using a device which does not allow you to see this information, please send me an email to [email protected] and I will send you the file from my own collection.

There's another Headless Horseman out there. This one haunts the eastern plains of Montana, USA. The specter is said to be the ghost of a soldier who was in the US 7th Cavalry Regiment. It is said he lost his head to a flying tomahawk during the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Some say this is the specter of George Custer himself

The original is one of the greatest anti war songs. This so-called reply is tacky. You shouldn’t think you can speak for any of those young men who died, let alone imply they were happy with the hell they literally walked into.

This is very nice thank you Anthony. I have always known this with different lyrics, something like: Oh an Austrian went yodeling on a mountain so high/when along came a [dickey bird?] interrupting his cry. Yo de ah , yo de lah hee hee [yodeling continuing...]. Something like that. I love it either way. Cheers and peace 😊❤✌🏻✌🏾☯️🎐☮🌹

Thank you for that Lizbeth. Although the information I have indicated this to be an English song, I have at the back of my mind that it was Austrian, the chorus sounding as if is should be yodelled.

Tony since I asked you to record this song, I have continued to research the topic. I found that for most of the time that Banjo and Christina were collaborating on the song, Christina played a very early model of the akkordzither/autoharp. It had only 3 chords, C, F and G or G7. Playing it with only 3 chords made it more authentic.

People have been made to believe and accept that they have to work like a slave for food and shelter. So their highest aspiration is to have the slave masters negotiate with them. That's the real tragedy. They do not want to leave the plantation, they just want a better bed of hay and a less painful whip. Keep voting, a savior is on his way to save you.

There you are again, Tony. Great to 'sea' and hear you ... 'once more'! I have recently become involved in a shanty singing club. One observer asked me if I knew that song about 'going to sea no more'. I was half familiar with it, and undertook to learn it. I immediately thought of you ... because you have covered everything! As before, you remain my mentor, Tony. Many thanks. PS. I like those accessible chords.
