I get wanting to show off your skills but it would be about a million times less comfusing, if you would leave out the verbal shortcuts and just let them come up in the captions.

when I changed the color theme and clicked on generate, it generated new prints, it didn't recolor the print selected
@SusanRutledge6 күн бұрын
That's the thing about the AI - every time you are going to get a new print. However, you can go about changing colors another way. With your pattern selected on an object, go to Edit>Edit Colors>Recolor Artwork. Here you can play with colors to your heart's content and save any patterns that you like as the new color. Here is a tutorial showing how to use this recolor art feature kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHKTXqd-drKDpbM Hope this helps!

Hellow Susan, I love your tutorial but I cant follow you because my "outer/ inner corner, end/ start" tile options ( within pattern brush panel) arent available, just the first on the left, the side one tile... How I can change that? Thank you.
@SusanRutledge10 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure they are there, but until you realize how to find them, I can see where it would seem they are not. There are little "tic" marks at the top and the bottom of the row your pattern brush is in. Drag your start or end tile to the far side of the row and after you start dragging, hold down the Opt key (on a Mac), and it will "drop into" the space reserved for those start and end tiles. The Brush Options panel will open up and you'll be able to see which slot it went into. You'll eventually learn to gauge the right spot to drag to. I hope this helps. Please let me know. If you need more help, I can record a quick video for you.

I don't see the link how to save patterns that we generate

Is this the link/video you were referring to? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJjEZpxrj6-GaaMsi=saMg-YHc6qcAJ9fB

It's on the end screen of the video. One is a link for a color series and the other one about adding color with the Blend Tool is the one I was referring to in the tutorial. You can watch the whole video or jump to 5:12 and it will walk you through saving color swatches --- they work the same as the patterns. Hope this helps. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi, is it possible to edit the pattern once the brush is created?
@SusanRutledge15 күн бұрын
Yes it is. Here are 4 ways. There may be more. (1) You can go back to the original design you used to create the brush, edit it and make another brush. (2) If you don't have the original design, you can drag the pattern brush icon from the brushes panel, ungroup it, edit it and then create another brush. (3) If you just need to make a few changes to the brush after it's applied to a stroke, you can select the stroke it is applied to and convert it to outlines. Next, ungroup it and you can change anything you want. However, it will no longer be a "pattern brush" so you won't be able to apply a different pattern to the stroke. (4) double click the pattern brush in the pattern brush panel - there are numerous options to change in the panel. Let me know if this helps, and if not, what are you specifically trying to do. Perhaps I can give you a more accurate answer.

I'm glad you found this tutorial helpful. Several years ago, I started digging for more info on Pattern Brushes and at the time, there wasn't much available. I ended up writing and publishing a book about how to make them, and then decided video tutorials would be more helpful. That's when I started my KZbin channel. In that process, I "accidentally" came across art brushes...and fell in love with them! Have fun!

Hi Susan. Great video! Goes over so many useful things illustrator users should know. I have a question in regards to area type and the text itself. I have some fonts (in particular baskervile) in all caps and the letters A, S and O are taller than the other letters. Is it possible to make the area size (Text box) perfectly line up at the bottom and top of the text? I would really appreciate the information from a seasoned designer. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
@SusanRutledge3 ай бұрын
First of all, thank you for the compliment. I'm glad you liked the video. Now then, I'm not completely sure I understand your question. If you want the text to line up with the top and bottom of the text box exactly, I would suggest playing with the leading and increase the space between the lines of text. You don't have to use whole numbers. Try adding .1 at a time until you have the desired spacing of your text. Adjust leading in the Properties Panel in the Character area. It is the small icon on the top right (underneath the Font name field and the field where you choose Regular/Bold, etc.). Let me know if that helps. Or if I misunderstood your question, please give me a bit more info.

This is super-thank you! I'm curious about the significance and/or difference between the radio button (where you click to target a layer) and the little square that appears to the right of it. I understand that the square shows a layer is selected... so what does the radio button mean? Can you have one without the other? Why have two different icons/indicators?
@SusanRutledge3 ай бұрын
You'll find Illustrator often has multiple methods to accomplish the same task. However, one of the things you can do with the little square (even with all layers closed in the Layers Panel) is select an item on the artboard, which will add a little box to the whole layer it's in...and you can drag that little box to another layer, effectively moving the selected item. I actually use this every now and then when I find my project is getting so detailed I need to add some layers and break things up. That's the only difference I know of.
