Now, the question remains: why would anyone use tiller commands? Although it may seem strange to us, that was actually the custom in the British Navy AT THE TIME of this disaster (remember, that was 1912!). That custom was finally changed in the mid-1930s. The main reason for this custom is only maritime tradition-practice of giving tiller orders is some sort of left-over from the old days of sailing ships, before the introduction of modern steering mechanisms. This scene actually shows how great director James Cameron truly is, paying attention to every little detail, trying to be historically accurate, although he probably knew modern public would be confused. And he explained it in this way in a DVD commentary. Furthermore, Bob Ballard, the man who found the wreck in 1985, in his book "The Discovery of the Titanic", in a chapter where he described the events leading to this disaster, explicitly says: "...the orders given were "hard to starboard" and "full astern", which effectively turned the ship to port."
