- Serious error in the scene (00:32) The officer gives the helmsman the order 'Hard to starboard' (hard to the right) but the helmsman turns the rudder to the left and later confirms (00:50) 'Rudder is starboard' although it is port. In the crash scene you can see how the Titanic slowly moves to the left and tries to get past the iceberg on the left. The helmsman also turned to the left (port), but the order was to turn starboard. - As a former sailor and helmsman, I noticed this immediately.

Sorry, my friend, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this scene. The thing is, the order given ("Hard to starboard") is something called TILLER COMMAND. If you are a sailor, I'm guessing you already know this-the tiller is essentially a lever, located above the rudder on a rotating axis and it always turns in the opposite direction. So, if it turns to starboard, according to proper tiller order, the rudder and, ultimately, the ship turns to port. In other words, EXACTLY as we see it in this scene and exactly as it happened on the Titanic that fateful night. Furthermore, at 00:50 in the original (English) version the Quartermaster Robert Hichens actually says: "Hard over!", which only means that he turned the wheel as far as it could go (in this case, all the way to the left). Now, the question remains: why would anyone use tiller commands? Although it may seem strange to us, that was actually the custom in the British Navy AT THE TIME of this disaster (remember, that was 1912!). That custom was finally changed in the mid-1930s. The main reason for this custom is only maritime tradition-practice of giving tiller orders is some sort of left-over from the old days of sailing ships, before the introduction of modern steering mechanisms. This scene actually shows how great director James Cameron truly is, paying attention to every little detail, trying to be historically accurate, although he probably knew modern public would be confused. And he explained it in this way in a DVD commentary. Furthermore, Bob Ballard, the man who found the wreck in 1985, in his book "The Discovery of the Titanic", in a chapter where he described the events leading to this disaster, explicitly says: "...the orders given were "hard to starboard" and "full astern", which effectively turned the ship to port."

---- That night the helmsman mistook the Titanic for a sailing ship. On a sailing ship you had to turn the wheel the other way. He did that, but due to all the stress he forgot that the Titanic was a steamship. When the chief officer gave the command "Hard a port", he made the same mistake again and turned in the opposite direction. So that's right...
