wrong..for instance I have anxiety, I visualize the symbol ganesh..an elephant whom easily moves obstacles out of the way...with east, easily breaks thru barriers...with no question. I chang a mantra regarding ganesh....usually to music, music and the mantra and the association with ganesh over and over and over in an enjoyable motivational way and then..I overcome my anxiety over the actions i am about to take to solve the issue. Do mantras work....yep.

It depends on the work. If it's work I enjoy and get into a flow state every hour or 2 is fine. If it's something I don't enjoy as much I feel like I need them every 20 mins 😂

So, this gives a framework for a workday. However, are there other, more macro, strategies for balancing work/play? For example, if you are trying to accomplish as much as possible in your life, thus trying to be as productive as possible outside of work, should we also limit total days or hours per week of work, or can we just use this model continuously, 7 days per week, to be ultra-productive?
@DrBrynn Жыл бұрын
It's a good question. Every person is different in terms of how sustainable it all is. It will depend on many things, like what other stressors you have in your life, how strenuous your various tasks are, how well you're sleeping, how much you enjoy your work and your colleagues etc. In general, from the brain's perspective, more isn't more. You need breaks, rest, downtime, days off, holidays, likely more sleep than youre getting, meditative time or 'time in' (contemplation, daydreaming, meditation, visualization, prayer etc), time to relax. These are great for your brain and have been shown to INCREASE productivity ultimately, not the opposite - what you 'give up' in downtime you should make up for in productivity. It's a real win if you know this: you get to relax more, for longer, AND get as much or more done ultimately. Keep in mind, you won't necessarily know you're burning out until you do, and once you have, the time to reversal can be months (for some people it is years). It pays, then, not to overdo it - the upside is incremental while the downside can be radical. Does that make sense?
@BadAssDude69 Жыл бұрын
@@DrBrynn Thank you so much for the quick response. Yes, that definitely makes sense. How does one differentiate between a necessary break/day-off and mere negativity about beginning/continuing a productive task? In other words, how does one, in reality, find the optimal balance that creates optimal productivity (determining when to take days off, cap on hours worked per week, etc).

@@BadAssDude69 Another variable answer because there's not a singular solution: everyone is different. Also, this will vary over your life course, age, and life circumstances too. You can probably push yourself when you are younger and avoid any serious damage or burnout (though it is still very possible and does often happen - youth doesn't make a person invincible!). In general, you are listening to your body and mind (the brain is a mind-body organ) for signs you've had enough, are nearing an end, or need a break. Here again, how fatigue, exhaustion, or warning signs of burnout manifest for you will vary from anyone else and over the life course. Some people start to get migraines more often, or can't sleep. Others notice food sensitivities or auto-immune like symptoms kick up. In general, watch for signs you are extra fatigued, ruminating, are irritable, feel more emotional (including anger, frustration, hostility), feel overwhelmed and/or feel no joy/satisfaction at work or in your work. These are signs you need to slow down or break. For how long? Again another variable answer only you can determine, ultimately. I think of it - for myself in my work even - like stretching after a good workout: it should basically feel good, burn a bit from time to time (but in a good way), and definitely never hurt. If it hurts you're doing it wrong. 😀 I hope that helps 🙏 🙂

For you, Josh @BadAssDude69, I'd recommend the book 'Rest' by Pang. He answers these questions on a macro and micro (day to day) scale based on his research. I enjoyed the read as well - great airport book.

@@DrBrynnHow about voice or video calls? The closer to in-person, the better?
@DrBrynn Жыл бұрын
@@BadAssDude69 At work, when trying to convince, influence, persuade, or change someone's mind, the closer to in person the better, typically, except for video calls: research shows it makes people more uncomfortable and no one likes to feel like they are being surveilled, especially when contemplating being influenced or changing their mind. In this case, phone/voip/no vid agreement is best so people can listen to you without being watched. If you're FaceTiming your kids or spouse or Mom or best friend - video works great :) Hope that helps!

And when you take breaks that way, does that mean you have to make up for that. In other words, should you end work later to make it 8 hours?
@DrBrynn2 жыл бұрын
No, that's the brilliant part: research shows you get more done during your work sessions to 'make up' for the increased rest time. So take more breaks within your 8 hour shift, as an example, on the ultradian schedule - you'll get more done in less time. Get more breaks and be just as productive? Yes please!

I work for myself, the only "break" I take is to go to the hardware store for supplies.. Time is money, I'd rather finish my work on time and go home instead of sitting around and do nothing.. I don't sit on my a$$ and take breaks at work on my customers expense, hence the reason I get referred to new clients...
@BadAssDude69 Жыл бұрын
The point is, if you never take a break, you're often working slower/less efficiently and doing shittier work and having shittier interactions with your clients without realizing it. I'm sure going to the hardware store does you favors on this front - if you, deep inside, enjoy it, I would say that's evidence of such.
