Watched it for the first time a few weeks ago on streaming. I was very touched by it, and couldnt stop thinking of it. So I had to buy it on DVD and rewatch. The movie balance the drama in such a great way. The sadness and the comedy, that embrace the story and characters, that we dont need much info of eachother to understand them. I always say, a movie is great, if it feels too short. Wich this one does, even though its 2 hours long. Do I want it to last longer? I would say no, because I think it would ruin the balance.

The most intense scene i ever saw in a film. Expressive and impressive, warm and cold, love and death all condensed into a moment of passion and passing. But words can never embrace the whole beauty and depth of the longing and finally with the last breath, merging for eternity.

Leider.

A bright, tuneful movement expressing the young lovers' joy, moments before a mournful though beautiful movement where the doomed Mélisande, wounded by her jealous husband, gives birth, but dies soon after. Like much in that symbolist play, we never learn quite why or how-dark forces are abroad-but Sibelius, who knew the turmoil both of a _coup de foudre_ and, later, tragic loss, skillfully expressed both extremes in this work.

Me, even in 2022. I wrote on my blog only last night: 'Why do I never tire of hearing this music?' I also wrote some time ago that while this is the scene which makes me emotional, it's his relationship with Yu which I find most life-affirming.

Sibelius's heart-rending take on the final act of Maeterlinck's dramatic gem of Symbolism harks back to pre-scientific mediaeval ideas on the nature of signs and symbols, life, death, and prescience, where mankind exists in a shadowy world of hidden meanings, magical wonders and hidden malevolent forces. Love can be both sublime and dangerous - the young, ethereal and beautiful Melisande, discovered and rapidly taken in marriage by the besotted old widower prince, Golaud, soon falls fatefully in love with her much younger brother-in-law Peleas. Their all-consuming, innocent love is doomed when Golaud discovers it and kills Peleas in a jealous rage. Melisande, also wounded, later gives birth to a small girl then (almost inevitably) dies.
