As a youth, I recall hearing and watching this original broadcast. The weekly broadcasts of The Voice of Firestone were a must in our household, and to them, I attribute the beginnings of my lifelong love of classical music. Blessings on Howard Barlow and his marvelous guest artists, like Warren!!

Even Warren realized that in terms of flexibility (vocal as well as physical) the complete role of FIGARO was not for him aside from the aria which he recorded & often sang in concerts plus in his initial MET audition in 1938. Actually he started working in the chorus at RADIO CITY music hall some 4 years before that but had a rough time of it, as he was not given any solo opportunities & only a bit later began voice lessons with Sidney Dietch with whom he progressed rapidly.

A joy from beginning to end. What a great, great singer, musician and personality. This level of artistry simply doesn’t exist anymore, and we are all the poorer for it. Thank you for reminding us of when vocal Giants walked the earth (Warren, Merrill, Bjorling, Callas, Milanov, Tebaldi, Corelli etc etc etc)

@@donjose8250 There is a long standing dispute about whether the mouth should open horizontally, which is what Caruso said, or vertically, which is what most singers do now, to an exaggerated effect. The best example to see this is to compare KZbin clip of the very young Pavarotti in a recital in Moscow, where he is using the vertical drop, and him in his prime career, when he had changed very much towards the horizontal.
