He knows he nails it when he cannot help but smile during the performance and all the other backup musicians work magic. Everything just melt.

This recording is the best I’ve seen. Not even the studio version sounds as good as it did when I heard this live.

Some ideas. (maybe everybody knows this already). The first song titled "Work Song" that I know of (Nat Adderly and Oscar Brown Jr., 1960) is about a guy on a chain gang. (There is a similar scene at the beginning of the movie, "Oh Brother Were Art Thou."). So when I came across Hozier-Byrne's Work Song, I wondered if there was a connection. Here are the three connections I have found so far: The rythym part at the beginning and throughout, is easily understood as guys breaking rocks on the chain guy. They used to sing together and pound the rock together in beat w the music. - see Oh Brother Where Art Thou. 2.) The first line, "Boys working on empty ...", could be the guys on the chain gang. 3.) Most of Hozier's song is a love song where he is telling the listener about her and about his devotion to her. There is a verse in the Adderly/Brown song that does that too: "Gonna see my sweet honey baby. Gonna break these chains off and run." There ya go.

Boys workin' on empty Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat? I just think about my baby I'm so full of love I could barely eat There's nothing sweeter than my baby I'd never want once from the cherry tree 'Cause my baby's sweet as can be She give me toothaches just from kissin' me When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin' in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin' up a fever I didn't care much how long I lived But I swear I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her My baby never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don't forgive me I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissing on my baby And she put her love down soft and sweet In the low lamp light I was free Heaven and hell were words to me When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her

The female harmonies during the chorus are my favorite part of this song and it's something you really don't get in the studio version. This is soooo satisfying to listen to. Thanks so much for sharing!

You already know this, but you are so blessed to have been in the video and to have been witness to this performance! I have only seen him live once so far . I took my (now) ex-boyfriend to see him for our first Christmas present together (though it was the following April) in Vegas. It was a performance I'll never forget. I absolutely adore Hozier! I have a 100% Irish great great grandmother with the same last name without the H. I like to think of Andy as my long lost cousin.

I played guitar and sang for years in my dad’s band, and I don’t think people understand how hard it is to be stomping like that and sing and play at the same time. I’d have to be sitting honestly. This guy is pure talent.
@JTD472 Жыл бұрын
Disagree. If they’re on diff tempos, maybe. But singing and playing something simple like this is pretty intuitive.
@erenjaegerbomb8653 Жыл бұрын
Not pure talent - talent mixed with practice and dedication 😊
