They used real children as the voices, so it was literally the voice of a generation. The boomers never stopped wanting their Maypo.

Funny alternative to the saccharine BS that mostly filled the Vast Wasteland at the time. BTW - at 3:05 it's Sunday morning during the churchy 1950s and nobody - not the kids, not Uncle Ralph, not his guests - is going to church.

My kids grew up on Wheatena, Maypo, and Maltex hot cereals. I believe I ate more than they did. I had to google it to see if it was still available...it's been so long and online shopping has taken over, so who knows what is in the stores these days, and who even wants to go there...not me.

Emery Hawkins animation. My mentor Corny Cole went on an on about the dude, he did alot of the Woody Woodpecker cartoons. Solid work.
@shannaobrien54547 жыл бұрын
John Hubley created Marky Maypo. Emery may have worked with him, Wikipedia does not credit him doing the Maypo commercials, but does cite Hubley who also did Mr. Magoo. Same style.

Hubley often used Hawkins for his films. I wouldn't doubt that he didn't, but he often had a set of animators who worked for him over the years.
@shannaobrien54547 жыл бұрын
More than likely. Tastes change periodically. Especially in the advertising world. I'm sure a lot of animators worked over time with one another for different projects and studios

Oatmeal is truly horrible next to maypo. Maypo is in the middle of cream of wheat and oatmeal but it doesn't lump clump up. Maypo with lots of butter, sugar and blueberries. Sometimes peaches apples or bananas to. They still make this wonderful hot cereal but don't sell it in stores. So you have to order a case of 12 online for the same price as other hot cereal at the grocery store. A box last me a week anyway. The maple flavor is really strong, so for the life of me, who would actually mix honey in it when sugar has the same calories?

+Mr. Midshipman i have it available in my shoprite up the street so you just have to shop around for it...

Maypo, Wheatena, Farina, Zoom and a couple of others were once nation wide. Grew up seeing them on stores shelves everywhere on the west coast. Other cereals became popular and some like these slowly lost their appeal and lost shelf space starting in the late 70s or so. Some stores can still be found here or there that carry them but is now mostly midwest regional or online. Really liked Wheatena, very healthy wheat cereal that uses the whole grain, nutty flavor and texture. Some of the others only use portions of the seed and some like Maypo were pre-sweetened or had competition from Cream of Wheat. No stores real close to me so I order a couple boxes at a time which last me and hubby a long time because we like something different every morning.

John Hubley animated these spots in the late '50s (his son Mark was "Marky's" voice). The "still frame" at 3:45 was a cue for a live local announcer to deliver his/her own ad copy for Maypo to viewers {I've seen an example of woman doing that, via an old kinescope tag}.

Wheat in and of itself without the bran and germ is a rather bland product but adding other items does enhance it. Maypo had maple, though I do not recall if originally it was the real thing or not. Did not care for it. do not remember how sweet or not it use to be. Never been into pre-sweetened stuff, most is over done or artificial yuck. Ever think of adding fruit, honey, sugar?

@shannaobrien54547 жыл бұрын
Yes. Was everywhere at one time. Was never a fan, maybe because of being pre-sweetened. Competition, changing tastes, fast or frozen foods changed things. Can still be found online, regionally in mostly the midwest, or the occasional distant store.
