Possibly my favourite NTNOCN sketch. Just a shame the first minute has been edited out - this gives the context that makes Mel’s and Pamela’s characters’ lines and delivery so brilliant. Still amazing tho that so many commenters here love this sketch without it….

"I know these kids." I think that was the genius part of the sketch - the sympathetic social worker, who was a stereotype so well-known at the time (and Pammy's appearance as her was excellent) - so of course we all expected her to disagree with the suggestion; her agreeing was the punchline, really.

I'm not sure if my Victorian upbringing was actually a blessing. Some kids would benefit from working as they are among older people who can guide them from their experiences. Some kids now 2023 seem brain dead they haven't been taught anything. I had head injuries once I could think a little though, my memory was wiped I didn't know my name but I had some activity in my brain. I knew what a drip was and that I'd taken the drip bag off the hanger and dropped in on the floor because I thought it was causing my headache - that's how I knew the nurses meant me when the said don't take the drip bag etc, Ian!!!

Really? In which country was that then ‘cos it wasn’t the UK. NTNOCN was never overtly political anymore than any other comedy of the time. Politicians were fair game then as they are now. The main aim was just to make it funny.

I'd say about 3/4 of the time, British humor is better than our's in America. Few exceptions, of course. I will say that our "greats" shit on your "greats" tho.

interesting thanks, I need some examples of 'great' would make a good comparison table, movie series, sitcoms, standup, etc. mel brooks tream movies cracks me up as does mae west and those around her, dunno where to put charlie chaplin on nationality ... global? , jim carey sometimes and andy kaufman always * muppets vs ? spitting image - the office isnt funny unless you are one of the hundreds of million new service staff who enjoy sad office politics ... * mel brooks team vs goons and navy lark, and monty python and fawlty towers, and the carry on xxx teams, black adder team, mr bean french comedy, comedy store team and the young ones, tony hanckock, and ... etc etc. ? benny hill team etc? * lenny bruce vs max miller and bernard manning and the standup team on 'the comedians' circa 1971 along with freddy star and jim davidson etc, * that was the week that was team with david frost, mock the week , etc, etc vs saturday nigh live ? so many to pluck a fraction so stats needs work :)
