Watching this set of photos, I’m made to realize - why has it taken me so long to realize it (?) - how closely tied, in this society, masculinity is to sports/sports to masculinity. How I have suffered from this (shallow) mindset, how many others like me have as well? A new, wider, more inclusive understanding of masculinity is, no doubt, required. What do you think gents?

Do relaxed male friendships exist? It is something I have never experienced in my life.

Before birth control became widely available, men naturally congregated amongst themselves. Unless a man was serious about getting married and immediately starting a family, it was advisable to spend your leisure time with your buddies. Many of these photos are men in the military where the presence of women was very limited. None the less, the stigma of "bro culture" was nonexistent, and men were happy to just be "one of the boys." For women, sexual activity was strictly relegated to marriage. They, too, were happy to limit the degree and nature of their social contact with men lest they run the risk of ruining their reputation.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the man at 6:00 who is using another man's head for a writing surface is the famous journalist Ernie Pyle.

Thank you for using that word, it's all about "Camaraderie", there should be more of it without calling it gay. Life is lonely enough without having good friends to make this journey with.

At 0.41, those two guys appear to be ar Terendak Garrison in Malacca Malaysia. I was stationed there in 1967/8 / 9 and have a similar photo of myself in almost the same position. The buildings behind are the soldiers barracks, the roof line is identical. The dog tags are not familiar, they may be Australians or British. It was the 28th Commonwealth Brigade Garrison.

My great great uncle had a box full of Physical Culture magazines from the early 1920’s to the early 30’s. That is basically what the editor encouraged. Just work and you will be strong. The pictures seemed to testify to that.

It doesn’t matter that these men are handsome or not. What matters is that at the times these photos were taken these men were part of a brotherhood. I only wish I had been part of one too.
