These islands are a waste of taxpayer wages. A select few live here and all pay for their playgrounds. These are sandbars at sea level. It is stupidity that builds or allows to build here. And what about all the debris left in ocean and disposed of? What about the sewage? This is pure insanity. These places should be used as temporary. Mobile living. Generator power. This is a terrible waste

It is ridiculous that tax dollars are wasted on roads and infrastructure on barrier islands. Only the rich can live there, all homeowners should pay into a fund when disasters happens they can pay to fix the island without tax payer dollars.

People don't realize that this footage is probably a month afterwards. I was there and this looks like a Hilton compared to what it was when I got there. Those piles were two stories high and took weeks to get to this point.

Lived in Maine my whole life (19 years) and that season is still the worst i've seen by far. Reminds me of Buffalo or Mammoth Lakes. We got crushed that year like never before, Feet upon feet upon feet.

We took a helicopter twice from Page Field to get over before the bridge. It cost as much as many boats were charging at the time. I can still smell it. 8 foot of water on the first floor. We dragged many things to the curb. All things. Anything metal rusted quickly in that ocean water. I didn’t get to go out in the streets because so much mitigation was necessary. Scraping mud for hours and tossing all broken and wet items outside. Knowing everyone else is doing the same. I didn’t expect a storm to affect me so much. Thank you for your tasteful drive through.

2022 was rough: Lost my dad, lost my dog and lost Sanibel. My dad and mom took us there (rented at the Moorings) in the 1980's and we continued there with our kids through the 2000's. Went there last February and I will return.

We will never recover. We can’t find reasonably priced labor. ($3600 a day surcharge) on top of the price of actual labor. Insurance companies are bastards…for instance they only gave us $1000 for flooring that costs $13,000. Lots of scammers out there trying to take advantage of old people. We are going to move more inland because these type of cat 4 or 5 hurricanes happen all the time now along the gulf coast. Goodbye forever Sanibel!

I'm glad to see that nature won in Sanibel. Sadly it has been way overbuilt. Like so many things in nature the humans just had too much hubris. I am so amused by Christians when they build on sand. They read the Bible but they don't heed any of the warnings.

Amazing how quickly the white well to do had access to Sanibel. 100 crews working 24 hrs a day!!! How are the fixed mobile home parks people faring? Or the downtown business owners in ft. Myers Beach. Or the people of color in Ft. Myers city. Evidently there was no damage there at all judging by news reports.

So much debris... You all should build a new island with all that rubble or mound it all up and build on top of the mountain you create. Maybe it will help to be a little higher in elevation.
